Garrett C
PS: ITRON never made it to anything bigger than a cellphone :p Not true. ITRON is on everything from cell phones, CD players, you name it. <sarcasm>It's probably on the chair you're sitting in now. </sarcasm> Am I the only one that realizes that we're way off-topic?
LordHatrus
THe defenition of OS should really be: Anything with a monitor, bigger than 3 inches, not an a little black and white LCD on my CD player capable of displaying 8 characters at once  We ARE way off topic. LordHatrus
ok, the average user chars... Linux - Average User: Smart. Probably knows 1+ comp languages. Brandname PC - (Includes Dell) Can't do much. Needs tech support for burning a CD. Brandname expensive PC - (Falcon, Alienware) thinks they're leet. Really not. Windows, but selfbuilt PC - Probably doesn't know a lanugage, but at least understands what people are getting at. Mac - AVERAGE user - You can see a mac user from a distance... Recreating scene with one of my english teachers a while back: I handed her my cd with my video/power point (no, I don't own MS Office, so shut it, I did it on linux and made it compatible) and she somehow managed to make it NOT WORK on the PC in her classroom, but work on her mac. When asked why It didn't work on the other comp (Turns out she broke the cd drive) I said 'well i made it in linux' and she's like OHHH so THATS WHY IT DIDNT WORK. I almost strangled her. *this close* Fortunately, she went on maternity leave, and the world was happy, and i finally got a good grade in the class :) Edited December 23, 2003 by LordHatrus
Garrett C
Heh, I'm no TRON user, by any means. I don't even have a CD player... (I wonder what my iPod runs...) SuSe Linux 9.0 and XP Home here. I'll step away from the argument for the sake of the thread and the moderator that is probably pulling his hair out by now. Good day. :)
SuBHuMaNGuY
*hops back on topic* Yeah if they come out with a new iMac I may get one...or I might just spring for the 20 inch with my income tax check :-D And c'mon guys... can't we all just get along?
LordHatrus
I'm with subhumanguy on this one. Actually, I'm always with subhumans, I just usually call them Dell users. NO WAIT DIDNT SAY THAT~~ btw, subhuman guy, your sig is very fitting for someone who wants to get a new imac.

The non-expandability of the iMac gets me and I haven't quite accepted the computer as a replaceable appliance idea that the iMac seems to push. Granted, the price difference between the PowerMac and the iMac is pretty large ;)
Bling3k12
Dont care about the general comp user.linux has more comps running it than OS X, i believe (now) Does anyone run an apple comp with mutliple screens? Do they even SUPPORT multiple screens? Even Win NT supports 12 monitors or so. MACs very rarely have non-monitor outputs. Do macs OFTEN have 5.1 surround? Why did mac turn of Hyperthreading when the compared their processors to intels? Before you go off spewing your assumptions, why don't you use the magical tool of Google to read up, so we don't have to keep answering all your questions for you. Yes, Macs can run Multiple Monitors... why the **** wouldn't they be able to? As long as you have enough graphics cards, it can run it. Non-monitor outputs? Sure, but you can always get the appropriate tools if needed... I have the Video Adapter for my iBook that lets me watch things on my TV. The new G5's have Optical Audio out, and for most users, people don't need 5.1 Surround Sound, but if you need it, it's there and in place. And why did Apple have Hyperthreading turned off when they compared their G5's to Intel processors, because as it's been stated, Hyperthreading can also slow down certain tasks, this even Dell said (ooh I said it, your almighty hatred for Dell, since not everyone is 1337 uber l!nux us3r). THe defenition of OS should really be: Anything with a monitor, bigger than 3 inches, not an a little black and white LCD on my CD player capable of displaying 8 characters at once Why? It's an Operating System, a system to provide instructions to operate things. Therefore, it's an OS. Are we off topic? Damn right we are, but you brought it up, we're trying to set you straight so you don't become one of the others to just continue to spew misinformation. Windows, but selfbuilt PC - Probably doesn't know a lanugage, but at least understands what people are getting at. Mac - AVERAGE user - You can see a mac user from a distance... Wow, ok... lets take a look at this... The Linux average user is smart... sure they can use an OS, but I've met a few Linux users that are pretty stupid. Brandname PC users like Dell... So, these people are stupid because they don't want to spend the time and money to build a computer? So what! If it's cheaper, why the hell would they care? My friends aren't stupid, but they use and buy prebuilts because they don't want to have to build one and the price for convenience is well worth it. Brandname PC users that buy expensive PC's... so these people aren't Leet either because they wanted higher quality computer components than the lower cost prebuilts and didn't want to build them themselves? Honestly, if I wanted to get a prebuilt, it would be from Falcon Northwest. But I'm able to build one myself, and I probably would. Windows but self built - Probably doesn't know a language? You're back to assuming IQ levels based on computers. They could be some pretty stupid people, but be able to build a computer. Mac users you can see from a distance... wow... thanks, I guess..
LordHatrus
You got it :) I was actually joking 'bout the average user thing, but whatever. anyway, anything that doesn't have a monitor shouldn't REALLY qualify as an OS, its probably better defined as an ENVIRONMENT. And you took that quote out of context Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country! See? TOTALLY random, and out of context. EDITL Can't believe we have 4 straight pages of us flaming at each other.....

hoyablue
I just read in the latest MacWorld that Apple had made a 44 million dollar profit this quarter. Bling3k12
Maybe some of you need to turn off your macs, go eat some mince pies, drink some booze and lighten up over the chrimbo season  I'm already ready for Crimbo  And LordHatrus, if by your definition, lets take a CD player... a set of instructions (set of conditions) that will operate hardware and have human input (under which one operates a computer, as it relates to the hardware) is an operating system. As simple as it is, the buttons that switch tracks, play and pause playback, and the button to stop playback and the instructions that the little microprocessor with instructions on how to interpret commands and then passes along to the hardware, that my friend, is an Operating System. You can make it as simple as that or you can make it as complex as any modern day OS, but either way, it's still an operating system. And I know someone asked about it, and the iPod's OS is built from a company called Pixo, which was bought by Sun just a few months ago. Their old site now goes here: http://wwws.sun.com/software/products/delivery_server/ Edited December 23, 2003 by Bling3k12
