G4 Boot up problems

Recommended Posts

When I try and boot my G4 (Dual 1.25GHz, FW800) I get a folder icon flashing between the finder icon/face and a question mark. Having looked on google I'm guessing that this means that the boot drive can not b located(?)

This is the second time that this has happened to me since I owned the machine, now I know that IBM's deskstar's aren't exactly reliable, and with this being my first mac, I'm hoping that the drive is the cause of the problems and nothing apple related.

Would you agree that the HDD is the cause, and possibly in need of replacement?? If not, any other suggestions or remedies, I don't feel like re-installing OSX, downloading all the updates and so forth..

I got it on the 30th of October, it was a refurbished model from cancom (cancomuk.com)

I booted form the CD, used disk util, tried everything I know, it still gave the error though. I posted this thread from a friends notebook, which we ended up playing games on whilst OSX (10.2.3) re-installed, and that seems to have sorted everything. Just seems odd that it can run fine for weeks and then just screw up beyond belief.

Is there any way I can check if it's the drive or not ?

Cool, I've delt with that company before, and just found this in there catalog.

"All our refurbished equipment comes with a 3 month CanCom warranty, should a problem occur within the first 3 months just return the unit to us (at your expense) and we will fix the problem"

So I'd higly reccomend getting them to have a look at it before the warrenty expires, as you said earlier the Hard disk could be pouched.

Good luck buddy.

Yeah, wanted to see if anyone had similar problems before resorting to returning the machine. Guess I'll contact them and see what they say, It's working now so I'm more than happy to wait a while before actually getting it seen to and I'm sure they have their hands full with the festive period :)
