Microsoft working to fix LinkedIn bug preventing users from canceling subscriptions

Microsoft has acknowledged a bug in LinkedIn that prevents users from easily canceling their subscriptions. Reports of the problem began being reported in LinkedIn’s Help Forum almost two weeks ago, with multiple users claiming that the ‘Change’ option under ‘Premium Subscription’ settings was either unresponsive or did not offer an option to cancel the paid subscription.
The issue also meant that users were billed for an extra term – or more – if they did not successfully cancel their subscriptions or were unaware that the cancellation did not go through, even if the ‘Cancel Subscription’ button was available. Users also report receiving no confirmation about the status of their cancellation request, adding to the confusion.
Microsoft said in a statement to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley that it uncovered a bug that prevented users from accessing the “newly added cancellation flow” in Settings. Here is the complete statement:
In addition to fixing this bug, the company also noted that it is making more changes to better inform Premium subscribers of changes to plans or billing cycles. The firm will also be introducing reminder emails to notify users of upcoming renewals or when they approach the end of free trials.
Currently, the workaround for those facing problems with canceling their subscriptions is to head to the help page here and file a case under the ‘Other’ section with a ‘Premium’ comment.

LinkedIn's massive mobile app and website redesign brings Stories, new UI, and more

LinkedIn today announced a major design refresh for its web and mobile clients. The company says that this redesign comes almost five years after the previous refresh, and aims to make the experience “easy, inclusive, enjoyable”. As part of the refresh, the firm is bringing UI enhancements that improve navigation, new features for search, and focuses on accessibility as well.
The UI now brings more rounded corners, larger icons, and warmer colors. The larger touch targets and overall UI changes help improve interaction capabilities for those that use accessibility features and for the differently-abled. The Microsoft-owned company also plans to add a dark mode to the app and web client soon.
In addition to the look and feel, the company has also revamped the search experience. Search results are now organized by categories such as jobs, groups, courses, and more. The mobile versions of the service are also receiving keyword filters. Users can filter through these categories from a carousel at the top on mobile, or use the filters on the search results page itself, on the web. Search results are also personalized with the results displaying similar “liked” courses or “People also Viewed” lists in addition to the search query’s results.
The redesign also brings the ‘Stories’ feature that the firm has been testing internally. The company says that it “took the time to understand how this format fits in the professional context” and calls Stories a “more human way of sharing”. The feature is identical to Stories on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Another significant area of improvement is the messages section. The company is working to add support for users to directly connect to video meetings on Teams, Zoom, and other third-party services right from direct messages. Other features include the ability to edit, react to, and bulk manage messages.
The redesign begins rolling out today to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

LinkedIn sells presentation-sharing platform SlideShare to Scribd

Microsoft's LinkedIn announced today that it has sold SlideShare, the presentation-sharing service it acquired in May 2012, to Scribd. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Scribd will take over the operations of Slideshare on September 24, including its 100 million users, presentation upload and hosting tools, as well as its existing documents. Trip Adler, Co-founder and CEO of Scribd, said:
Over the past eight years, after its acquisition by LinkedIn, SlideShare has powered the social networking site's content experience for professionals with the capability to upload, share, and discuss documents on the platform, LinkedIn noted. For Scribd, the addition of SlideShare to its family means an expansion of its reading ecosystem by more than 40 million presentations. The company said it provides information and educational resources like study guides, business templates, academic papers, and public court filings as part of its premium subscription service. It also offers audiobooks, podcasts, sheet music, and magazines.

LinkedIn cuts 960 jobs due to impacts of the pandemic

In a late-night email to employees yesterday, LinkedIn has announced that it will be cutting around 960 jobs, which is close to 6% of its overall workforce. The letter from CEO Ryan Roslansky cites that the “extremely difficult decision” is being made because of the global pandemic and because fewer companies are hiring. The layoffs affect the Global Sales and Talent Acquisition organizations.
Roslansky notes that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to reduced demand for the company’s “internal hiring and for [its] talent products globally”. Therefore, some roles across the Sales and Talent Acquisition organizations are no longer needed. He also adds that for sales team, an online servicing model makes more sense over a field sales team and that the company has made investments in this regard.
As for those that are affected by the cuts, the company will be providing a minimum of 10 weeks of severance pay. However, the amount may increase based on tenure, country-specific practices, and other variables. Additionally, the firm will be paying out all due bonuses in full for those eligible. In the U.S., employees affected will receive pay for 12 months of health insurance. Across other regions, the Microsoft-owned company will provide six months of healthcare or cash equivalent for premium payments.
In addition to the payments, Roslansky notes that the employees will be offered a six-month training program called Momentum to help them prepare for interviews, job search strategies, LinkedIn learning courses, and more. Laid-off employees will be allowed to keep cell phones, laptops, and “recently purchased equipment to help work from home”. The firm is also providing immigration support and for those on company-sponsored visas. Affected employees will also be considered for hiring for newly created roles in the company.
Impacted employees will be communicated in a staged manner. While employees in North America, Brazil, and parts of the APAC region will be reached out to in the next 24 hours, those in France, Sweden, and Spain will be informed in August and those in Italy in September. Employees that are being informed this month will be with the company until August 21.

LinkedIn will let you add a recorded name pronunciation to your profile

LinkedIn announced today a new feature that lets you record your name's correct pronunciation and add that audio clip to your profile. The audio will be accessible to anyone visiting your profile.
The company says the feature is intended to help your contacts understand how you prefer your name to be pronounced. On the other hand, you can also visit the profiles of other users in order to learn the proper pronunciation of their names, assuming they have made their own recording available. LinkedIn noted that correct pronunciation is "an important part of making a good first impression and creating an inclusive workplace".
It is worth noting that recording your name pronunciation can be done only via LinkedIn's mobile apps. On both iOS and Android, you can get started by tapping on your profile photo and selecting View Profile. Then tap on the edit button and the "+Record name pronunciation" option next, after which you'll need to hold the record button to record your name. If you're satisfied with the result, tap on the "Use" option, and finally save it. Otherwise, you can always cancel and take another shot at it.
Keep in mind that the total recording time is 10 seconds only. LinkedIn also recommends recording in a setting with low background noise and speaking each syllable clearly. Your recorded audio will then appear next to your name in your introduction card. Although audio recordings can be made only through mobile, anyone can listen to the clip via any device.
The feature will be made available starting this week. Next month, it will be rolled out to all members worldwide.
