Sleeper Veteran Posted December 22, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 22, 2003 Just got my nice new video card :D Saphire 9600XT Fireblade:D with my Halflife2 voucher... so I go and get Steam like it tells me input my serial and i've got access to all the old halflife stuff with this key and HL2 will appear on steam once released :D anyways what I want to know is how does steam work? because within 10minutes of installing steam i was playing the original halflife in single player mode, when i check the steam directory it was 750mb.... have valve created some sort of super compression of sumtin? i mean 10mins to get halflife down? Cheers
nugg3t
u probably download a compress file, then it installs everything n then a file which was, lets say 260 megs, is now 750 megs.
Sleeper Veteran Posted December 22, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted December 22, 2003 i would say it would have to be one heck of a small file... the max i ever get on my ADSL is 90kbs and I tend to average at 40/50kbs???
memNOC
hhmm yea i wondered myself how Steam works actually..
nugg3t
hmm. even if u were going at 100k. that means every 10 seconds, u do 1 meg. multiply that by 6= 6 megs 6 megs X 10 mins = 60 megs. weird, how can a file only 60 megs, become 750, lol. unless u installed some stuff from a cd. or did u download the whole game from the net

Killa-b
i would assume, that it downloads the first 3 levels, and such and in the background perhaps downloads the rest. also there would of course be compression, so you could do it in about 400ish megs. but my best guess is that it does progressive downloading. Fugi
steam connects to valve and dles the game steam is only like a dlmanager and game launcher ;)
threetonesun
It progressively downloads the game as you are playing. You wait for the files necessary to play like, the first level, and then it starts. Like streaming video, only ... a streaming game.

bangbang023 Veteran Posted December 23, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 23, 2003 How does it work ?? It doesent  It does work if you know what the hell you're doing. Stop going through steam threads saying it doesn't work. Sleep, good question though. Maybe cause I'm medicated on everything and anything cause of this flu, but I am completely stumped lol. YaZoR
at first steam was crap, it really was, no denying it. now though valve had sorted it and it works as it should 99% of the time (for me at least).

El Bourricot
probs gotta do with this thing, if you right-click on a game, click options/properties/whatever, then click calculate cache status, it says the necessary size for it to be "ready to play" is 48MB for HL, and 72MB for CS. Now what that exactly means i have no idea. + my key has suddenly stopped working (invalid user ID error when connecting to servers - i actually BOUGHT this key grr)
