Career decisions...

Recommended Posts

I want to pursue a career in the networking field, but I'm unclear about a few things.

Such as, would having a BA in Computer Science be ideal for going into this field, I'm unsure, as we haven't done anything remotly network related at my school. It mainly focuses on programing.

Also, I'm not too sure about the demand for people in the networking industry, but was wondering if someone in the field could give me some rough statistics to what the demands for people in this field would be.

Finally, I want to know if there is any certifications I'd need that'd be key to getting my foot in the door for major networking firms.

Any information you can provide will be HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

try to get your A+ cert, and a cisco cert shouldn't hurt at all (Y)

I was thinking about getting a Comptia A+ Certification, though based on a few job search sites, Cisco and Microsoft certs seem to be in high demand. So I might take that route. And perhaps later on I'll try and get a Network+ cert from Comptia.

Certs are decent as a foundation but nothing can replace good ole experience.

MCSE's are a dime a dozen and it doesn't mean they KNOW what to do in the field (see above).

Training 'Schools' that espouse you'll be making $50K+ after completing their course are full of shizznit.

Perhaps you could look into Network Programming? Make it a natural progression? There's always demand for Network Programmers (both corporate and game companies).

Your lucky you are not in a country like Pakistan where jobs are very rare in the field of network either programming or administrators.

  • 4 weeks later...

computer jobs in the US are becoming very scarce... i was a network/desktop/database admin and web dev at my last job and am a VB programmer now, but i see alot of people switching careers lately (from IT to something else)...

I know community colleges (at least in az) offer a "certificate" instead of a deploma. This should only take around a year and will probably only cost 1500 - 2500$ (high end). While your in school, look for a entry level position, and start working your way up. After you complete the courses, you will have a combination of education and experience.

 More than 180 million people in India regard Hindi as their mother tongue.

Learn to speak Hindi for when they ship your computer job Overseas.

hmm...I was wondering, I'm still in high school and I want to get a comptia A++ cert. Although I viewed this as more for fun, I have some questions.

1) If I register, will they take me seriously?

2) How do I study for those really specific things (hardware questions)?

3) Tips are also good from any pros out there =(
