DirtyLarry Veteran Posted December 23, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 23, 2003 (edited) okay long story short. i let a friend of mine borrow my powerbook who is home for the holidays. he is using Flash and he just called me and said that when he presses F5 (or any F function keys for that matter) it brings up stuff like The Sound, Mute, Brightness, etc. So since I am not in front of my powerbook it is escaping my mind, but i know it can be done... so how the hell do you disable this so Flash will just add a keyframe like it should when you press F5 and not bring up the sound volume? Thanks In Advanced, DL / edit - okay i finally did remember it is the Function (Fn) key at the very bottom left of the keyboard... now i am assuming this can be changed in the system preferences on the powerbook to shut those keys off though completely and just be used as standard so hopefully that does it... thanks anyway Edited December 23, 2003 by DirtyLarry

However, the preference pane uControl (link) will fix that for you. Along with its other features, it has the option for "real function keys," basically switching out the default action of the function keys. The reverse action can then still be accessed by holding the "fn" key. Version 1.4.1, the latest, has fixed all the known previous bugs and is compatible with 10.3.1 and 10.3.2. Hope this helps. I use this to make the enter key (the one 2 keys away from the space bar) act as a control key. This means I can right click (control+click) with one hand now that is comfortable. That helps tremndously, as you were right OS X does not have that option (but 9 does which is strange). Anyway i donwloaded UControl and am emailing it to my friend as I type, so my Powerbook will be hooked up when I get it back.! and also is there a sticky thread with other similar tools that are just as cool and useful as this one anywhere. i just tried searching real quick and did not see any?? Again Thanks so much that is beyond a useful tool!!!! (Y) Happy Holidays!
