+Warwagon MVC Posted June 18, 2015 MVC Share Posted June 18, 2015 Computer gets to be 5 years old and its just JUNK no matter how bleeding edge you buy, etc.. my soon to be 7 year old i7 920 12GB RAM workstation takes offense to that
Jason S. Global Moderator Posted June 18, 2015 Global Moderator Share Posted June 18, 2015 my soon to be 7 year old i7 920 workstation takes offense to that yeah that's def. not true these days. Starting w/ the Core i-series, that basically became a non-issue. The real reason i upgraded a couple years ago from my i7 920 to my i7 4770k was for the other tech - PCI-E 3.0, USB3.0, SATA3, etc.

So if I were to add a decent supported card that would be fixed. If I watch a youtube video in 4k I instantly blue screen I agree with you, I do with I could have that modern stuff. My main computer on my couch is the Brix Pro i7 4770R ... so the i7 920 down stairs does feel a little slow, but I think a lot of that has to do with that hack job of a graphics card. BinaryData
astropheed covers his Computers Ears, "sssh, you're not junk... you're not junk my sweet angel". This comment made it worth while to read. Lmao. I've had my same computer since about 2007. I've upgraded the MOBO, GPU, and case fans. It's an old Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz. It's so dang old, my MOBO OC's it to 2.83Ghz. Lmao. I would get something that would last you 3 - 5 years, and upgrade as you go. Frankly, the ONLY thing going for you, in terms of waiting, is DDR4. But with that said, DDR4 won't be cheap until a year or two has passed. So, by the time you're ready to upgrade AGAIN, DDR4 will be right on the money. So, I'd buy something for around $1500 USD, and upgrade the RAM. Now, if you're someone like me who has money to ###### away, then go all out. BudMan wants to choke me on an occasion. The HDD I'm buying is $550, but I do a lot of downloading, and transferring of drives. But I won't go into my insane ideas. Build a decent rig, splurge on the RAM, and GPU. Don't go too overboard, 16GB is a bit much for the AVERAGE user. If you do Photoshop, or any programming 8GB is Plenty, but if you do 3D Studio Max or AutoCAD work, I'd suggest 16GB. I just finished a new AutoCAD rig for my old co-worker, spent $4500 on it. Company paid for it. He has 4x 30" Monitors, dual 970 GTXs, a sweet SSD, and 32GB of RAM. Monitors were the most expensive part.
Showan
I really do thank everyone for their feedback. I have elected to wait and see what SkyLake (or even Broadwell for that matter) have to offer. I will definitely grab a GPU that has native DX12 support once released. I guess I will also wait to see if Microsoft announces a Surface Pro 4. If so, I'll grab one of those to hold me over.
The Evil Overlord
If you have the money, build it, as all parts eventually come down in price, and usually will still be supported with drivers. I'm rocking outdated tech, (AMD 6350, EVGA GTX760 etc...) but it's still a beast of a rig, I don't regret spending the cash I did on it.
shockz
Since when is 16GB an exuberant amount of RAM? I regularly get to 8-10GB with a VM, browsers, music, etc...

I agree with you, I don't even use VMs on a regular basis and often reach 8-9GB of RAM usage without a single VM being on.
