(Mac) Getting Album Art for iPod Library

Recommended Posts

I currently keep all my music on my iPod. Most are CD's that I own that I have ripped that do not include the album art. Is there a way I can download album art to the songs themselves without doing the manual drag and drop method? While this method works, it is very slow.

I have tried and application called FetchArt, but I received an Apple Script error for some reason. It had something to do with the database so my guess is that it is because the songs are located on the iPod. I will try adding an album to my Hard Disc Library to test this theory, either way though, it is not working.

Ultimately it would be nice to be able to search and download the Album Art right through the 'get info' window along with editing the rest of the tag.

Also, second question, can anyone confirm that when I add the art by drag and drop, is it adding it to some iTunes database or is it actually adding to the AAC tag?

For MP3's, I know that it adds it to the file itself. I would imagine it is the same for AAC files.

iTunes doesn't have a central repository for album art anyways, I think it's all stored in the individual files.

Too late now. I did some searching and could not find anything close enough to what I was looking for. I ended up spending about 4 hours manually searching and dragging covers from amazon and walmart.

Interesting fact, walmart, believe it or not, has the most high quality images of album art. Pretty impressive.

Even better than the "see larger image" ones from Amazon? I thought those were about CD size.

Walmarts are considerably higher. It's actually a frightening though that wal-mart is capable of doing something well! (No offense to those who shop at wal-mart intended)

That was my same reaction.

500 pixels is 500 pixels on your screen. On my powerbook screen they're going to be displayed at ~120 dpi, on a crumb 17" CRT at 1024x768 they'll be 96 dpi, and at 640x480 they'll be 72 dpi.

The only time that's going to matter is if you print them and with modern printers hitting 5000x5000 that crumby little image would be a few millimeters square (very very small for you living in backwards countries that don't use metric units). They aren't suitable for printing so why bother.

When I finally re-encode my music collection I'll be using 128x128 images for cover art. Large enough to convert to icons without being wasteful.

I'm sorry Fusion but i see you've already done the job. By the way, you could use Mp3Rage to download album arts, it's very cool, and imagine? It get's them from walmart! :D

But from what I understand because of the difference in the database from iTunes and the database on the iPod, that utility does not work if all the music is on the iPod.

Mmmm I don't know really, since I use the "find album art" utility, and drag the picture manually on the Artwork zone in iTunes.

I remember I've done it to files who are on iPod.... I think... I guess i'll have to try...
