SPeedY_B
We all know that the official MSN Messenger client for OSX is out-right nasty, but for me it does it's job and I'm not really fussed about finding an alternative. But something that I've noticed is that it doesn't support WebCam conversations, I can use iChat AV, but most people I know still use Windows and therefore MSNm, does anyone know of an alternate client that supports WebCam conversations? mac15
yahoo does video for both platforms
SPeedY_B
No one (that I know) uses Yahoo! though, everyone just uses MSN because it's almost the standard of IM.. like iChat and OSX.
plasticparadox
I'm in the same boat. I'm hoping that the newest AOL Instant Messenger beta for Windows is compatible with iChat AV, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll get a friend to download it when I get my iSight. SPeedY_B
Looks like it may do from the description. Again though, for me at least, everyone uses MSN and refuses to use AiM/Yahoo etc (which is fair enough, they're pretty nasty apps :/) After looking around, all I've managed to find are lots of annoyed and waiting mac owners and an online petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/msn64mac/) :)
Southern Patriot
I'm in the same boat. I'm hoping that the newest AOL Instant Messenger beta for Windows is compatible with iChat AV, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll get a friend to download it when I get my iSight. I've already tried. It's not compatible :( HUGELY dumb move on AOL's part, IMHO.
Southern Patriot
I'm in just the opposite boat. Most of the people I like to chat with are on Yahoo, and I like using the chat rooms on there. Unfortunately, there are only two programs that can currently connect to Yahoo's chat rooms, Charla and ChitChatX, neither of which works very well. Don't get me started on how lousy the experience is if you try to use the Yahoo Chat web page (chat.yahoo.com). Why is it that messenger clients can't keep the features at least ROUGHLY the same between platforms? I think the only one that is virtually the same between platforms is AIM, but I almost never use that.
theDose
i'm like wise, everyone i know uses msn messenger and tries to chat me up and asks for vid all the time. What i've done is hook up webcam xp on the peecee and instead of sending vid to one user i can send to all. to receive vid, i use a second account on the pc... nuts
plasticparadox
I've already tried. It's not compatible :( HUGELY dumb move on AOL's part, IMHO. Argh. But thanks for testing.
SPeedY_B
Quite disappointing, AOL need a slap for that. :/
Southern Patriot
Argh. But thanks for testing. No problem... Yeah, I HAD to test it about 5 minutes after I found out that AOL had released video support.
DjmUK
Is there a piece of software out there that can use a webcam via the MSN servers..? So, Yahoo! (which no1 uses in my area) can support webcams...so how can that help us MSN users..? I've never used iChat AV because I don't know anyone who uses it, everyone I know all use MSN Messenger. hoyablue
Its rumored that Microsoft could be releasing a host of new applications at MacWorld, including a new Office and MSN, so I'm keeping my hopes up for MWSF.
SPeedY_B
Well that's (sort of) good to know. Hopefully we'll see something remotely like MSNM 6, and hopefully it wont be a bloated resource hog like 6 is on windows and 3 is on mac :\
ss1
MSN Messenger 3.5 is a resource hog? To be honest I haven't noticed thus far! I did use Fire for MSN, but found it lacking and hence switched to MSN Messenger 3.5, which seems to do a good enough job for myself. I haven't any need of all the extra stuff that's been included since version 6 on the windows side. Other than make some minor GUI modifications, I can't see what else I want extra in it.... ss1. Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 27, 2003 I've found MSN for Mac to be about the same "bloat" as iChat. It chugs on multi-user chats, but besides that it's about the same resource usage (at least that's what ps -auxww | grep MSN shows). I'm hoping GAIM somehow figures out webcam stuff for the various protocols (trillian did it, which is a good sign), which makes it's way into libgaim, and that makes it's way into various cross-platform apps ;)
deviantdesigns
i agree probally just as much as any other mac user, msn messenger needs to be updated for the mac to support voice, video, etc. I guess signing the petition [http://www.petitiononline.com/msn64mac/] as speedy_b mentioned above may help, microsoft has taken recognition into these petitions in the past . btw when is this 'MWSF' taking place so we can be on the lookout for new versions? Anyone know?
the evn show
http://www.macworldexpo.com/macworldexposf/V40/index.cvn MWSF = Macworld San Fancisco. Macworlds are sort of like Christmas for the Macintosh, a lot of major hardware and software announcements are made at these expositions. Whenever you here people talk about "Stevenotes" (steve jobs' keynote address) they're probably talking about something going on a macworld. That's not to say that macworld is the only time apple announces new things (it's not: last year we had the iTunes music even for iTMS/new iPods and WWDC for the G5/10.3) but it is a time when you can expect almost every major mac software person to demo the upcoming products. Macworld is the 5-9 (the exposition starts on the 6th) of january. Hope you've saved a few pennies.

SPeedY_B
Had just come to post that :p Hopefully it's true, but I'll still be holding out for something that can converse with MSN via cam, official or not :)
