SFNE Freak
Do you think the 12" PowerBook 1Ghz shows significant performance improvements over the 12" iBook 800Mhz?
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 26, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 26, 2003 Probably some, but nothing massive. The G4 isn't all that much faster than the G3's that are in the iBooks. The main benefit will be from a faster subsystem, rather than the processor.
plasticparadox
Also If you want a SuperDrive (DVD burner), you'll have to go with the Powerbook.
Chad
It will show quite a bit of performance boost when using Photoshop or other similar multimedia apps that have the altivec instructions in them. They run at 128bit instead of the 32bit that normal apps do. For everything else, you probably won't notice a difference unless one has much more ram than the other. SFNE Freak
Alright, I'm going to play with both at CompUSA tomorrow. I guess I'll run a number of tests and such. As well as they style test. ;)
hoyablue
I personally prefer the PB due to its material and construction. Also, I'm a little hesitant when touching an iBook due to the last one I had, it had logic board failures and from what I hear its a pretty rampant problem. My father bought a 12 inch PB and he is more than happy with it, and I am in love with my 17 inch PB so yeah... we're one big happy family. Except for that new Dell we bought for my brother... isus
i'm using an ibook right now, no problems with the logic board... anyway, i would go with the 12" powerbook because it has more gpu power, more cpu power, and looks nicer too.
WebOrbiter
I would get the iBook since it has a G4 now and is cheaper for near the same power. Get a powerbook if you need a big screen or a SuperDrive.
angelrendon
Let's just say, if you have the extra money, get the 12 inch albook, and if you don't, you're not all that worse off with te 12 inch iBook.
five04
i'm planning on buying the ibook 12" but before i do, i'm waiting till mac world san francisco on january 6 to see if there's any new drop in price for the pb 12" or any new version of it. Bling3k12
No, I don't foresee any possible updates to the PowerBook line.
mipra
I would go with the powerbook
acous
if you're going for the 12" model you obviously want portability, you're not gonna get any really serious work done on either the 12" ibook or 12" powerbook. the ibook is a great deal imho, not much slower than the powerbook. if you go for the powerbook you'll be paying a premium for the style. the ibook is better value. things to note are the lack of DVI output on the ibook, and lack of superdrive on the ibook. Chadwick
id go powerbook, thinks like the dvi and superdrive are options you might not need, but at some point you will wish you got it so you can burn that movie sitting on your desktop etc. etc. ;)
aldo
Also, you cannot run Pro-line apps on the iBook. That includes Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Shake, Soundtrack and Logic.

I'm not sure if that is the case anymore with the new G4 based iBooks. They may run but probably not as well and you might have some trouble with DVD Studio Pro and some third-party external DVD burners. I think Apple should release special versions of their DVD authoring software (iDVD) bundled with third-party external DVD burners. Some of us bought powerbooks but went for the Combo drive. It would be nice to have an upgrade path to DVD burning. It would also allow iBook owners to use iDVD.
