Yes well you started preaching that all online games are the same... and then decided to tailor your argument for a very specific breed of games. The kind of person who'll spend his entire evening wondering around virtual worlds trading chickens *will* be willing to spend ?10 a month, because they don't get out. The don't spend money on drinking and other social activities.

The rest of us actually do enjoy a normal sex life, and can't commit a set amount of money each month (I'm guessing the guy who said ?10 is nothing lives at home still) to something that we may only use for a few hours a week.;);)

And then, as EVERYONE else has pointed out, most games don't require persistant-world style servers. Games can be hosted locally, private / public 'non-official' servers can be created. If the game is good enough, servers are never in shortage.

Whilst you are right to an extent Cpt.Winters, you've completely missed the point for the majority of online gaming IMO.

Yeah but thats the thing, the only games that pay to play ARE mmorpgs, so basically the argument is tailored to them specific games anyway, i dont see you having to pay to play WC3 etc... hence why MY argument was tailored specifically towards that genre of gaming.

And im happy for you, whilst no one really cares what you get up to or how many times you have sex, that isnt at question.

Ok Captain Winters, then what exactly is your point?!??!?!!

People pay to play mmorpgs already, obviously that's accepted within the community. You're not saying anything new there. I really don't see the point you are trying to make!

Everyone seems to be in agreement.. for mmorpgs you pay, for anything else you don't *have* to because the key point of note is that they don't tend to be reliant on official servers. If EA started charging for server access, people would just use 3rd party servers. They don't have that control unless it is one unique (set of) environment(s).

I really don't see what on earth you are trying to say.

the difference here is the type of game. mmogs aren't 32player servers that just need to have arbitrary uptimes and no peristant storage for data, thus you HAVE to rely on official servers, or more exactly, official data centers. we're talking in numbers of multiple thousands on the same gameworld.

Hmm, currently...

PlanetSide - Initial Cost FREE

7 Day Trial

then $12.99 a month.

Wow... break the bank!

Some games are worth paying for. I mean, look at PlanetSide, they keep adding new things to it all the time and the like.

Also, I think someone mentioned this, with things like PS, the game is running all the time. All Battle.NET really is for things like WC3 is a peer2peer network connector. You find someone to play with and the game is hosted on the machine of the person that created the game.

So, reality... WC3 doesn't require an awful lot of Blizzard's time to keep up to date and going correctly. However, something like PlanetSide/Everquest does.

Although, tbh, they should charge as much as they do for expansions for said games.

The XBOX Live! approach isn't really making MS money from the consumer. Its more about making money from the games manufacturers.

So, for example, Counter-Strike... the makers of the game have to pay MS to test the game, pay extra to have it tested on Live! and then its released. Then, the makers of the game have to line MS's pocket each year to keep the servers running.

Either way, games publishers get pinched with costs too.

Just my 2c worth.

I dont agree with paying subscriptions UNLESS the software is given out for free. I think game company's have a cheek to make you pay for a game you can't even use without a subscription, its a joke!

I also agree that only MMOG's should be subscription, although i feel it is possible for these to be publicly run just like any other game.

Another thing i found a complete con is the addition of Adverts to the loading screens of MMOG's that require subscriptions, they're taking the mick!!!

Is there an echo in here? :)

Thats my point, the original thread poster, im assuming, didnt specify, everyones prattling on about how they wouldnt pay for this that and that other, when in reality they dont do it anyway.
