Detroit
This is probably the noobiest question alive, but , does OS X get viruses and if so, what antivirus doe it use?
Dazzla Veteran Posted December 26, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 26, 2003 If I remember correctly, there's isn't any specific OS X viruses. OS X can be a carrier, in the form of forwarding on viruses manually and macro viruses that might effect Office v.X but I don't think there's been an OS X virus yet. Dazzla Veteran Posted December 26, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 26, 2003 To be honest it's just not an attractive target for virus writers, with the market share being the size that it is, there's not really an incentive to spend time writing a virus. plasticparadox
MS Office macro viruses are the exception. Thank you Microsoft.
cerbero
To be honest it's just not an attractive target for virus writers, with the market share being the size that it is, there's not really an incentive to spend time writing a virus. Also because of the BSD underpinnings. The virus must somehow get root access to be able to do any real damage to your OS/machine, other than deleting your personal files. Southern Patriot
To be honest it's just not an attractive target for virus writers, with the market share being the size that it is, there's not really an incentive to spend time writing a virus. Actually, I tend to think that the very fact that OS X has never had a virus before would be a MAJOR enticement for someone to write a virus for it. That would be a rather major accomplishment. Unfortunately, according to Wickedkitten's recent post, there does appear to now be one virus for OS X.
Southern Patriot
wow, that alone is a sure thing for anyone to switch to mac  Even the Wall Street Journal said that a while back (don't have the link for the article at the moment). :D
isus
norton still does antivirus for the mac, there are a few others... but because practically nobody writes a viruses for mac os', you don't really need to buy it.
Chad
As a computer user, part of the responsibility is using antivirus software. While no virus, save one, affects OS X, you can still host virii on your Mac, which can be sent to windows. IE...Word files with the macro virus. They don't affect OS X at all, but when opened in windows, the virii goes nuts. Those OS X anti virus programs check for all virii. If they only checked for OS X virii, it wouldn't be necessary.
