hfred
I am going to set up a wireless network in my home and I have an ibook so I need a router. I was going to buy the Linkeys Wireless G Router (here) But it says you need windows. Can I use this router on my wireless network? (I am setting it up on windows desktop but wireless the ibook)
Chad
I can testify it will work fine. The "windows only" part refers to Linksys' support...ie if you call in, running OS X, they may not help you with your problems. But mine worked fine. Turn it on, switch your internet to Airport, and bam, your going. And you can access it via your internet browser from the Mac just fine.
isus
also, firmware updates are probably only through windows as well.

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted December 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 27, 2003 I've done them via my iBook before. I think I did it through the browser-based method they have, but I can't remember. BTW, stay away from Netgear wireless routers if you want to use WEP. They're a great product (the web interface is lightyears ahead of Linksys's), but we've had problems both in my townhouse and my parent's house with them dropping connections with WEP enabled. If WEP's not something you plan on using, then I would recommend getting a NetGear. it's all dependant on your needs :)
the evn show
I'm using that router now. Firmware updates are done through a panel on the routers internal website or via a modified version of TFTP written by linux/cisco - it's GPL and the source is available. It really was just "plug in and run". I plugged in my cable modem to the internet port, and plugged it into the wall. My Powerbook automatically saw the wireless network and joined it within 10 seconds. I've called tech support a couple of times and they didn't say anything about not supporting OS X (one guy was particularly helpful inspite of whatever "no mac policy" they have). Infact, I'd really like it if someone could point me to a place where linksys says anything about not supporting os x with it's products. Nearest I can find they draw they are both equally supported. Southern Patriot
Was it just me, or were the first two pics in that link REALLY corrupted? The first one was kinda OK, but the second one was really crappy.
