a reason to love safari

Recommended Posts

safari is nice enough as it is, just for being so fast, even on my 500mhz g3 ibook, but i found another reason to love it:

on neowin, instead of writing "neowin.net -> Posting New Topic" in the tab, it just writes Posting New Topic. another good idea from the apple devs to show more info in less space :)

Maybe it reads the domain name and compares that to the first part of the title and if it's the same it just cuts it out.

Hrm.

I almost don't like the idea since it compensates for poor coding on the webdevelopers part or even hurts the site by removing important information from the title.

internet explorer compensates for poor coding on the web devs part, as it barely follows the w3c standard.

but i don't see how it hurts the site:

further explanation: in the tab, it takes out neowin.net, but in the title bar along the top, it puts in the full title...

Mine responds like Neyo's. I'm not on a Mac at the moment, but I think if you do the replying in tab A, while tab B is open to Neowin.net, tab A won't show Neowin.net. I've noticed, while replying in tab B, that the text in tab A changes. I've never paid enough attention to what it changed from.

If you have multiple tabs open, it looks for similar words in the front of multiple tabs and removes it from the title. It figures that you may be using tabs from the same site that sticks common text in front of each. The reasoning is you can see that info in full in the window titlebar, but the tab is more compact and needs to save the space.

I never noticed that until now either . The window title bar shows the full name, but not the tab title. That's an awesome idea on Apple's part. I wonder how long it will be until someone develops this into an IE based tabbed browser for PC.

Another cool feature that I haven't seen posted anywhere:

Select a word(s) in safari.

CTRL+Click on that word.

Choose "Google Search".

EDIT: Hold down CMD to open the searchin a new tab
