Max Veteran Posted December 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 27, 2003 You are allowed to copy any of the games you legally own, purely for backup purposes only.
eXclusive
Well, then ... Its LEGAL ? So, i can make a thread on neowin asking how to backup a certain game, and what i should use ? Or would that break any rules ?
mint0
I would've thought so, its not piracy, its just backing up
twiglet
in that case, i would highly recommend Alcohol 120% from www.alcohol-software.com. will do the job you are looking for.

twiglet
select "copy wizard" from the main menu, at the bottom of the window that pops up there will be a "datatype" drop down box. select safedisc 2 for generals. i would guess the same for nfsu. baker
Actually, the DMCA allows licensers (game, music producers), to disallow it. If your games have ANY type of copy protection, even as little as Microsoft's "Please do not make copies of this disc", then you are not allowed to copy it in any way, even if you legally own it. Welcome to the wonderful world of licenses, in america that is =] Btw, first post here, I intend to visit and post more often. twiglet
np. im really impressed with alcohol 120%. when the program is reading your cd you may get at lot of data read errors. this is normal for copy protection like safedisc. the copy will still work. also dont be discouraged by the time it takes, once it gets past the read errors it will appear to speed up. usually takes about an hour or so. "The DMCA does not affect rights, remedies, limitations, or defenses to copyright infringement, includingfair use>" IANAL, but I'm pretty sure you can make a back-up for archival purposes, etc. EDIT>: Added quotes. eXclusive
Weird .... i tried making a backup of my game today .. TONS of errors and it took ages. If the (in this case) Game creator says you can make copies, you can. However, if they add any type of protection such as safedisc, and everything else they use, including the words "dont make copies" on the disc then you are forbidden from doing so. Thus the words "copy protection" =]
eXclusive
I can barely read what it says in the CD. The text is so small ... Are they stupid ?
baker
Just to clear up, the fact is, copying a disc is illegal, but if you bought the game the developers aren't really going to care. Walking across the street outside of the crosswalk its illegal..etc...and me, who happens to work in law enforcement know that all too well. The overly anal, purely law enforcement stand point, yes, its illegal - the real world answer, you wont get in trouble for it.
