A computer swap...

I need to know what's the chances for me to be able to get a full trade for my current notebook for an apple notebook of lower or equal specs? I have a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 Gateway Notebook, two USB 2.0, one 4 pin ieee 1394, 40 GB Harddrive, 512 MB ram, 32 MB ATI Mobilty 6 Card, and CD-RW/DVD. I have always been a Mac fan and I want to switch. Any helpful directions?

I dont see what is so good in Mac's. I think they suck, I mean, if you look around the internet, most programs are coded for Windows and not Mac. I think there are even more Linux programs out there than there are for Macs. If I were you, I would stick to my laptop.

I have no idea how much that is worth really.. There aren't many Apple users who want to trade an Apple computer, for an x86 (Windows) based one. I wonder why? ;) :p. You're best bet is to probably sell that laptop for as much as you can, and buy an iBook / PowerBook, from somewhere after. Hope it works out for you, I am sure you will enjoy your new laptop.

I work @ a Car parts dealer... we stock hardly any parts for Porsches, we have almost EVERYTHING for Fords, but you gotta order Porsche parts, generally... The parts are a lot more expensive too, but my guess is the driver prefers their 911, to a Focus. Its preference, but unless you drive that porsche, maybe the focus does you well, why change?

What a narrow minded statement...

For most people, the major apps they need are available for OS X and if not, there's a good possibility that there's a program compatible to it.

But if you wanna trade for my 700MHz G3 iBook, that's fine with me.

Congratulations on your poor attempt to make sense. :D

I would stay with the PC. But that's just me. Lahrd.

I don't know about many of these "recommendations" here...

For one thing, we have to start out by asking YOU a question!

What do you expect from the Mac laptop that you can't get from the PC-based one?

If there are some apps you are in need of, then go for the switch!

If the apps exist in Linux, make your machine a Linux machine (or dual-boot).

If the world of Windows suits your needs, stick with it.

</2 cents>

Oh my god... it's called an analogy... say it with me people... "a-nal-o-gy"

Now stop laughing just because it contains the word "anal"

Of course it's an analogy. But in order for it to be effective, you need to explain what it is you are trying to say...a legend, if you will. In his case he was saying that Porsches were Apples and Fords were PCs. One might assume that he may have meant that PCs were Porsches and Macs were Fords. He's myopic, of course, but hey, we all have our problems.

let's not turn this into a 4 page flame like I did over in the Mac sections two weeks ago, k? :/

Let's give this guy legitimate help.... btw, if this weren't in the GENERAL DISCUSSION catagory, and were instead moved to one of the MAC catagories, it would be mucho better, as anti-mac people wouldn't be posting, and this guy could get help....

If you honestly needed a legend to comprehend that...

Obviously you understood it, so you were intelligent enough. But the analogy was simple and clear.

Let me break it down...

1. I work @ a Car parts dealer...

This would be analogous of a computer store

2. we stock hardly any parts for Porsches

This would say they hardly stock any parts for the Mac

3. we have almost EVERYTHING for Fords

This would say they stock almost everything for PC's

4. but you gotta order Porsche parts, generally... The parts are a lot more expensive too

Unless you're going to a dedicated Macintosh retailer, you mainly have to order your parts and they're probably (but not in all cases) more expensive

but my guess is the driver prefers their 911, to a Focus.

The user would prefer their Macintosh to a PC

Its preference, but unless you drive that porsche, maybe the focus does you well, why change?

Unless you're using the Mac, maybe the PC does you well, so why change? This also brings into account markjensen's post about what he is wanting the Mac for.

Now to get back on topic, I'd tell him to go to a store that stocks Macs or talk to a friend that has one and try it out. But if he wants to get one to try one, that's all up to him and I'm not stoppin him.

Personally I'm sure you'd be able to get a decent Mac laptop for trading in the PC one you currently have. Its specs are fairly new, and quite good. Its always great to try out new things especially if you've always wanted to. Macs are know for their supreme power (that topples any PC, sorry guys but its true), so try it out, they're not only visually stunning but their interface is something new that you'll have to spend time getting to know, which can be an adventure for some, but for others who don't like learning new things a burden that shys many away from the MAC. Personally I like both MAC & PC, they both have their ups and downs, but MAC is kewl and so if PC. @ College in our lab 1/2 is G4 and the other 1/2 are some Dells, I use both, depending on what mood I'm in, or I just randomly pic, usually Mac because they're closer to the door and they have awesome huge flat screens :D

Go for the Mac, if you don't like it trade it back, its not that big of a deal, try something new, if anything it'll be fun as well as a learning experience, why try to have a PC thats a wannabe Mac? Buy the real thing lol.

Good luck :)

There is only one game I play, and it's on Mac. I want the GUI, I have the iPod, I want Safari, I want OS X. But my architecture forbids it and Linux doesn't support iTunes so I can't go with Gnome. I will trade down./

  • 1 month later...

Haha, so many people in denial. NO, DON'T SWITCH TO APPLE! IT IS TOO LIMITED!

Uh-huh. Show me any serious application that you can't get natively on OS X, or at least find an OS X equivalent for. It's ok, I'll wait, go ahead :p

As for the original post, I don't think you'll manage to convince anyone to swap an Apple for that. Perhaps maybe an old Pismo or G3 iBook. Sorry, but there's just very little incentive to go back. Do what's been suggested: sell the laptop to a PC user, and put the proceeds towards a new Apple.

Your sanity will thank you for it.
