A computer swap...

Mmm... I don't understand why PC people are so obsessed if someone wants to switch! Seems they take it personally, hey guys, it's not a war!

Anyway, I don't think you'll easily find some Mac user who wants to switch his mac for a pc (I had a pc once, and it's true what they say, once you've got a mac you never come back! :D ). I suggest, as others did, to sell your laptop, with specs like that you could easily do that, and go to buy a brand new Powerbook!

Good luck, and enjoy you'r soon to be new mac!

Sigh, another Mac vs PC thread.

Just my 2 cents.....I think the Mac is better for media (e.g editing movies) and the PC is better for gaming.

Both Mac and PC are good for general uses (word processing, internet browsing, etc)

I need to know what's the chances for me to be able to get a full trade for my current notebook for an apple notebook of lower or equal specs? I have a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 Gateway Notebook, two USB 2.0, one 4 pin ieee 1394, 40 GB Harddrive, 512 MB ram, 32 MB ATI Mobilty 6 Card, and CD-RW/DVD. I have always been a Mac fan and I want to switch. Any helpful directions?

Show me where he asked if he should do this. Show me where in his post did he say "should I trade a pc for a mac". That's right, nowhere. So if you aren't here to help him, he could probably care less if you think he should stick with a pc. Talk about being myopic...

As Neyo pointed out, the chances of finding someone willing to trade their Macintosh for your pc are quite slim. You'd be better off selling the pc and then looking around for a used Macintosh. To sell off the pc, head to ebay, arstechnica, anandtech. The later two have huge for sale forums. For used Macs, head to macnn or spymac as they have the largest for sale forums for Macs

running with the bad car analogy, you probably lost a lot of the value just by buying that computer. So just stick with it until you get some more money to buy a new apple. Otherwise you're going to end up either getting a) a lower quality apple, or b) spending 1.5x the actual value of the computer.

I took a quick poke at Gateways sight and it looks like their 2.4ghz notebooks are about $1500 new. I'm not sure what the exact depreciation is on a PC notebook, but lets estimate it's worth 60% of the new cost (about $1000).

If you could sell your notebook on ebay or at school (try posting at a university) you should be able to make enough to get into a low end iBook G4. If you have DDR266 memory in your computer you could keep that to use in an iBook. Another option is to go for the eMac which you could pick up nicely equpied for $1200 but it's no longer portable.

You could try eBay for some used Apple hardare but it tends to cost a lot more than similar age x86 hardware; probably a combination of the rarity of apple hardware, the loyalty of their customers, 'longer-useful-life' of macintosh systems, and the higher initial purchase price.

I think if you find anyone with macintosh system willing to trade they're probably going to want a fair bit for their system. It's probably best to just buy new (or from the apple refurbished store).
