Tek
Just wondering, since everyone's going on about who's a n00b and who isn't, so when did everyone start using Linux, and which version did you first use? I started using Linux 0.99.11 in 1994.
shihchiun
I used it for about a week the first time... then two days the second time. Never had time to learn it or anything, so now I'm back to Windows XP. Edit: Red Hat 9 both times. Edited December 28, 2003 by MrDennis89
markwolfe Veteran Posted December 28, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 28, 2003 I'm a noob. Bought RedHat 5.1 off the shelf at the store in mid 1999. Linux and I had a bit of learning curve, and I finally decided that I wasn't ready for Linux quite yet (or the other way around). I got fed up wiht Microsoft's OS for the umpteenth time about the time that RedHat 7.3 came out, and decided to dual-boot it with Win 98. Since then, I have updated my Linux to RH8 and discovered that having Windows was actually preventing me from learning Linux. So I completely ditched Windows. I am now running FedoraCore 1. I have a Knoppix CD I keep around to "demo" Linux to the curious (and have even used it once to recover data of a co-workers Windows laptop when it would not boot). I have installed Mandy on my laptop at work. I would like to start trying more advanced distros now, however with four young boys to raise, I don't have the free time to spend delving into the workings of Linux that I would like to. I use it because "It just works!", and the stability and power of the OS are incredible!
mstx
I used redhat 8.0 for 3 weeks, then i went back to xp
cork1958
Same here. Used Suse Linux 8.0 for about 2 weeks. Went back to XP Professional. Screw all that command line crap.
misecia
I think I started around 1995 with Red Hat 4 and then went onto SuSE 6.0, still have all my CDs of all the versions I've used :)
trpn
started out with mandrake 8.0 when it just came out. I used it for a bit but I could not stand the web browsers (mozilla 0.8, and konqueror from kde 2.2), couldn't get java to work on them. So I went back to windows. Played around with it about a year on and off, and slowly have gotten to the point where I use linux pretty much full time.
Danrarbc
The first time I ever ran Linux on my PC was during the 2000-2002 period. However I couldn't use the internet because I had my cable modem connected via USB instead of a network card. So I didn't use it long. Two months ago I was finally able to try for real - being forced back into the dark ages of 56k actually enabled me to use a modem in Linux (how's that for looking at the bright side of things :( ). So that's how long I've been using it seriously.
MR_Candyman
I started using linux with the introduction of Red Hat 1.0 I cannot remember what year that was though so I didn't vote.
lsdn
If I remember right, the first one was Rad Hat 4.x, then 6.x, 7.x, Mandrake 8.x and now Red Hat 9 (Shrike)
[ucw]prophet
I've been using RedHat Linux on my Web server since 1998. We started off with version 5.0 and haven't looked back since. I've been using Linux on my desktop on and off since 2000, but really decided to stick with it about a year ago and haven't missed Windows one bit. mbrewthx
I was introduced to Linux in earlier 1997 by the Network Admin at the University where I worked as the Help Desk Manager/PC + Win Server Adminstrator..and what ever else I was told to do.... But coming from a IBM AIX, RS/6000 Systems intergrator shop. I was uninpressed (externally that is).... But over time Dan showed my the benefits of both LINUX and BSD... HE would purchase SUN Sparc and load Linux on them it would just grate on the SUN people. Now 6 years later I run two linux boxes personally, a laptop and a desktop. SUSE 8.0.. WOrking with a friend on a Linux thin client solution for a non profit group.... Love LINUX...
LordHatrus
I started back in 2001... I think I started with the (then) brand-spanking new 2.4 kernel..... EDIT: Currently running slackware.
matt74441
I've been using Linux on and off since the beginning of 2002. Then in June of 2003, I installed Slackware and have been using Linux as my primary OS. I'm in the process of switching over to Debian or Libranet 2.8.1 (a Debian-based distro). wickedlester
I started with Mandrake 7.2. I didn't really use that much then. Last year I started using linux again and couldn't live without it. I have used mandrake since 8.0 all versions. Currently using Mandrake 9.2 with 2.6 kernel. I have also used slackware 9.0 and 9.1, suse 8.0, Red Hat 8.0.
xp1ode
another noob here, i started with Mandrake 7.0 and at the time i was such a MS lover that i guess i was too into windows that i didn't give it a chance, and left it, dont quite remember the time. Now i use knoppix from time to time just to see if it has become simpler, even tho i cant really tell just by one distro, but i like knoppix is nice simple small and best of all no installation if i dont want it. I been meaning to try out Fedora since i have it dl and all, but i lack a computer where it will run,i only have my desktop with xp and my laptop which wont run any distro after RH 7.5 i think it was. The vid drivers just dont let it even install, it could be something else i don't really know.
Slayer
Been using Linux since May (Red Hat 9), then went to Slackware 9 in the summer and Gentoo in the fall and haven't considered anything else since.
chavo
I've been using Linux off and on since Redhat 4.something. I guess it was in '99 or so right around the time Redhat 5.0 came out. I think I've tried all the major distros Slackware, Debian, Redhat and Mandrake at least. Right now I pretty much stick with Windows XP although I do have Mandrake 9.2 installed. MG-Cloud
I picked 2003 onward - I did tinker *very* briefly (read: for about 1 hour each in VMWare) with an old version of Mandrake and FreeBSD a few years ago, but they didn't do much for me. I made the switch to Gentoo in November, from Windows XP, and I love it a LOT! =)
isus
i used mandrake 7 for a little while, and fedora for a little while. of the two, i'd obviously pick fedora. but linux just isn't my cup of tea. neither is windows. see the sig ;)
