Virtual Memory ?

256 is fine

all you need to do is run the task manager all day while you do what it is you do on your computer

you can also run a RAM manager if you want

and at the end of the day look and see if your Commit Charge (K) has exceeded or tied or came w/in a few bytes of the limit.

or take a look at how much ram you have left or see how much the pagefile was being used with the graph

when you get up past 300 mb of ram that 1.5x RAM for pagefile size rule is redundant and doesnt even need to be used.

Defrag your Hard drive ( still needed in XP ) Set a fixed swap file at 250 mb , and you should have no problems. A fixed is way faster especially when your hard drive starts to full up. It avoids a fragmented swap file.

A fixed size swap file (v.ram) is a good way to go for performance , if you have enough free space you should set it yourself after defragmenting the harddrive, if you have 2 HDs put the file in a HD different from the one where you have windows for better performance in most cases.

The size used to have a rule of 1.5X your RAM, but this is usually not necessary on systems with 256 + RAM.

Personally I have 512 DDR 266 MHZ RAM and a swap file of 256 in a harddrive that works as storage, different from the one where I have windows and software but just has fast......Its a breeze.

Right click my computer, properties....look for advanced, performance (something like that) , virtual memory, set the old disk file size to 0 min and 0 max , and set a file that has the same min and max size in the other disk.
