go straight to Max Payne 2?

The story isn't hard to follow, so don't worry about that. Insight into Max Paynes character: he's a hard core cop who's family got murdered and he is really ****ed off, dark, and depressing. What else is there, really.

Now, if you enjoyed the 2nd one you might want to go back and play the first one, as it is more of the same.

play the first one first because you need a background of why max payne is how he is and how his universe affected him

Max Payne 1 and 2 could use more gore

Nah - I think it worked perfectly in the second one. Gore isn't necessarily to tell a good story - or, in MP's case, a cliche mediocre story that's delivered superbly. The lack of gore, but ultra-violence, also helped fit the whole noir feel more, IMHO.

That being said: As to playing MP1 first? Totally up to you, guy - I only played a portion of the first one first (I didn't care for it at all,) and the second was fine. My roommate never touched the first one - and he had no problems with the second. There's really nothing (or at least little,) from the first story that's poignant that they don't explain in the second.

I found MP2 to be much shorter than the first game - game play wise. The story is tight though. Its definately movie style candidate. Cool game nevertheless. I played it though on my TNT2 - gonna try it again on my Radeon 9600 Pro this week - see if I like it more! :)
