malebolgia Veteran Posted December 29, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 29, 2003 After another semester of College I find myself with stacks of papers from my college. You know the typical junk "Join YKA today", and whatnot. Well with all this junk is my social security number, and with that said I can't very well simply throw out this junk. So I'm in search for a paper shredder that will totally destroy these papers with my social security number. Any suggestions?
Evil Dragon
Why spend money on a paper shredder? Just burn it. :/ That's what I would do, at least.

Bling3k12
My suggestion, rip out the part with your SSN on it, make a pile and burn it. Then throw away the rest or recycle it if possible. Completely eliminate evidence of your identity and help the environment at the same time :p
MxxCon
DO NOT BURN IT! only moron will say that burning papers helps the enviroment go to any office store and buy cross shredder w/ smallest strip size. there is like 100000 different models. then RECYCLE that paper. Never once in my post did I say that burning would help the environment. I said to burn the strip of paper that contains your SSN. Unless your SSN is posted at a full 11" wide, this paper would be very small only take a few seconds to burn and not cause enough pollution to harm the environment more than anything else. I then proceeded to tell him to take the remainder of the flyer or paper and take it to a recycling center if possible. And I'm the moron...

I didn't say it helps the environment... It's just the best way to get rid of something that you want no one to see - shredding can be reassembled... You might as well just tear the papers into tiny little pieces.
Evil Dragon
Okay, okay... How about this... You put the papers into a bowl of water and let them sit there for a few hours, then take one of those egg-beater things to it. Then you simply strain off the water and... use it... to... water your plants... And recycle the paper residue... [Edit] Hmm... Come to think of it, rather than post again I could have simply edited my previous post, thereby saving valuable electrons.

Evil Dragon
This is all assuming that someone actually wants to take his SSN, and is willing to look through his trash to find it. But ya know - using the time we've taken talking about this he could have probably just torn off the SSN and eaten the paper. That is unless said person feels like searching through his feces. threetonesun
If you have a better place to throw it out, do that. We get trash collection at home, I trust that a lot more than the janitors at my university. Of course, that assumes you're just junking it instead of recycling it. Check out Staples or Office Max, they usually sell little strip paper shredders for pretty cheap (~$30, if I remember correctly).

BxBoy
I don't see why schools use the SSN as the default student ID, that's just identify theft waiting to happen!
