I'd be very surprised if Apple release a 2GB or 4GB flash based player at MWSF. Flash media this size is just too expensive. Lexar make 4GB CF cards, at $1,200 each. I've provided a link to a UK web store that sell these, just so you can see the price.

I believe that Apple could introduce an iPod at 2GB or 4GB containing a 1" Toshiba hard drive, rather than the 1.8" drives they're using now - however I wouldn't expect these iPods to be much cheaper without Apple taking a sizable cut in their profit-per-unit. They certainly won't be ?65 as mentioned in the London Standard newspaper, (which, by the way, was a nonsense article derived from rumour and speculation. They said Apple has 'announced' this new product, when they certainly have not.)

It is likelier still that Apple will introduce a miniPod containing a Microdrive, containing something like Hitachi's 4GB or 2GB version. But these, on their own, retail for $500 and $239 respectively. Even if Apple purchased them in units of 10,000 it would still be difficult to see exactly how the new iPods could be made any cheaper.

If Apple do introduce a flash or microdrive based player, which I think they will, it's likely that it will be "Up to 4GB" and flash cards will be interchangable but will come with 256MB or something like that.

Also, I just wanted to address this nonsense from uneducated users who are complaining about iPod batteries. The problem with them is they're not user serviceable. Sure, there have been instances whereby iPod batteries have died very quickly, but I have sold hundreds of these things, ever since their 1st generation iteration. Not many have had battery problems. In fact my 1st generation 5GB is still going strong with around 5 hours of life from a full charge. The problem I see is that when they do die, which is an inevitability, it's very expensive to replace them.

wooowwww, so much bickering between those with ipods and those with everything else! ;)

its as weird as the line divided between those with macs and those with PCs, those with ps2s and those with xboxes. Lets just agree to disagree, ok?

i have a slimx 350, or whatever- it was the first slimx, in any case, i love it- it was cheap as hell- but would i lov e an ipod? hellllsssss yessss, would i take the very low 5 gig ipod? for suure! both sides have their ups and downs, my slim x has an fm tuner and virtually unlimited space with cds, but at the same time i have to change the cds constantly.

the ipod has gigs of space and is small and has a sweet design,. but its expensive -they overcharge and thats for sure.

oh and dont fool yourself, apple doesnt compete against anyone! if they did the ipod would have been competitivley priced and everyone would have had one. I think its large price has made ipods and all things mac restricted to the few rich that can afford it,. and i think this is just to keep up apple's image as the "in thing" company, with exclusivity ;) :(

True, I have to agree with that, I've wanted an ibook or powerbook, but they're so expensive compared to PC's. That's why I'd be surprised if a cheap ($100 range) ipod actually did come out.

I can hope tho :)
