Mandrake Troubles

Recommended Posts

I placed the files of the ISOs of the Mandrake CDs in the directories c:\mcd1 and c:\mcd2. After booting from a floopy and beginning installation, everything went well until I got these errors:

1)

There was an error installing packages: libSDL_image1.2-1.2.2-4mdk.i586

Allowed me to go on = "true";

2) There was an error installing packages: howto-utils-0.2.12-2mdk.noarch

allowed me to go on = "true";

3) There was an error installing packages: libgal21-0.23-1mdk.i586

allowed me to go on = "true";

4) There was an error installing packages: libghttp1-1.0.9-4mdk.i586

allowed me to go on = "true";

5) There was an error installing packages: libdbcxx3.3-3.3.11-13mdk.i586

allowed me to go on = "true";

6) There was an error installing packages: libSDL_mixer1.2-1.2.4-5mdk.i586

allowed me to go on = "true";

7) There was an error installing packages: OpenOffice.org-libs-1.0.2-7mdk.i586

allowed me to go on = "true";

If someone could tell me what to do about that it would be grrrrrrrreat.

Another problem. When trying to start up KDE all the windows for it flash and it seems to load in a loop. Then I am met with the regular black and white text screen and it asks me to login from there. I do, then I attept to start KDE again by entering startx and everything seems to go OK. It gives me the "KDE configuration wizard" which I fill out. After doing so, the bottom bar and stuff flashes, then goes away and I am left with that funny blue desktop and nothing else. Maybe that is related to the problem above (?)

Any help appreciated.

do you not have a burner so you can burn these iso's to cd and boot from that?

Basically, if you wish to install from Hard Drive you must first make a boot floppy using the file hd.img. Once that is done, boot the computer with the floppy. It will ask what hard drive the mandrake files are located and the directory. Since the first CD is located in c:\mcd1, I put in "mcd1"(no quotes) and it continues. I will get the documents as well...

The integrity of the file is good, but I think it does not know where to "look" for the files. My next step would be to take all the RPMs from the second CD and put it in the first CD RPM folder.

I tried puttin in rpms and that didn't work. I tried just having the ISOs and installing using them on the hard disk, that didn't work. I still get those DAMN ERRORS!!!!!! ARRRRGGGGG! Is there nobody that can help?

Hi.

I looked at the Mandy link you provided, and didn't see any directions for installing from a hard drive partition... :no:

I did a quick google, and see that RedHat has a procedure at this location. And they point out that this only works for ext2, ext3, or FAT partitions.

Plus, entering a c:\ at a linux prompt seems to be incorrect. I am not sure that linux woudl know what you are talking about. :wacko:

The only other thing I can think of is to NOT place your .iso images in separate dirs. They have different file names, and will keep separate when placed in the same folder. Plus, I think that the installation will look in the same dir for all of the .isos.

Best of Luck!

Unfortunately lack of documentation was half the problem. All it really told about was making a boot image with a floppy to load ISOs from the hard drive.

You have misread my post. The Windows directory is c:\mcd1 and c:\mcd2, but when linux prompted for them I just put "mcd1"(no quotes). However, I deleted those two folders anyway, so now I just have Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso and Mandrake91-cd2-inst.i586.iso located in c:\, so when Mandrake prompts for it I type in "Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso"(no quotes). Doing either doesn't change my situation.

So yeah, both isos are located in c:\ and mandrake is able to load the first one, but I be damned before it can find those missing rpms!!! :angry:

OK, here goes...

so now I just have Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso and Mandrake91-cd2-inst.i586.iso located in c:\, so when Mandrake prompts for it I type in "Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso"(no quotes).

I think what is wrong here, is that perhaps Mandy doesn't know what partition to look in. Typing "Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso" is a filename.

I am not sure if you are correctly looking in the partition hda0 for the files or not. Or it may be hda1. I haven't worked on a dual boot system for about a year, and I don't recall if Windows defaults to partition 0 or 1... :pinch:

Did Mandy prompt you for a hard drive device (partition) to find the .isos? (like /dev/hda0 or whatnot)

One more thing:

What OS are you installing onto? XP? 98? How many drives do you have and how are they partitioned? And, if XP, are your drives FAT or NTFS?

I think I might d/l the Mandy ISO and start an install on my wife's XP box, if I think it might be beneficial...

The partitining went flawlessly as I am still able to boot from both Windows and Linux, though I cannot get Linux to work correctly. I resized the Windows 98SE partition. Each have about 50% of the hard drive and the hard drive is 8MB. Since it is Win98SE, it is Fat32.

Hmmm... You've got me.

I think I might need to *see* what was done and what it was doing to even have a clue where the problem lies...

Do you have a Linux User's Group nearby? Or some other Linux-using friends?

Forget the KDE problem, that was caused by the missing packages. I finally figured out how to install Mandrake from the hard drive. I will share this information with you:

1) Download all three ISOs. These can be found on various web servers. 56kers must purchase the CDs.

2) You must create a boot floppy using the hd.img file. To do this, use WinISO or another extracting utility to extract the following files from the first cd and putting them into a folder in your hard drive:

autorun.exe

the 'images' folder

the 'dosutils' folder

3) run autorun.exe, select "install mandrake Linux using floppy", select the write tab, select the "..." by image file field, and select the file "hd.img", which is in the image folder that you copied to your hard drive.

4) After creating this boot image thingy, close everything. If you wish, you can delete the folder where you put autorun and all that other stuff.

5) Create a folder on your hard drive called "Mcd". It should be located in c:\Mcd. Open up the ISO of the first CD and copy all the files in that ISO directly to that Mcd folder.

6) Open up the ISO of the second CD. You will notice two folders in that ISO, boot and Mandrake. Copy the boot folder to the Mcd folder on the hard drive. Then, open up the mandrake folder in the ISO program. You will notice the folder "RPMS2". Copy that folder to c:\mcd\mandrake.

7) Open up the ISO of the third CD. You will notice one folder: Mandrake. Open up that folder and you will notice the folder "RPMS3". Copy that folder to c:\mcd\mandrake.

8) Look in the folder c:\mcd\mandrake. You should have Rpms, Rpms2 and Rpms3 folders in there, in addition to other folders. The ISOs have been combined.

9) Restart your computer with the diskette in the computer. Your computer will boot from that disk. If you have only one hard drive partition, when it asks what drive the files for mandrake are, it will show one solection. It might show more if you have more hard drives or if that hard drive has been partitioned previously.

10) After selecting the proper partition, it will ask where those mandrake folders are. Enter in "mcd"(no quotes). If sucessfull, it will show "loading mandrake into memory".

11) Follow installation instructions. Be sure to configure everything properly, especially your video. Sometimes, Mandrake can have problems with testing the video adapter when prompted, so I recommend that you opt out of testing it.

12) Once installation is complete, you have little need for the mcd folder on your windows partition anymore.

I thank you all for your assistance in this matter and I hope the information above helps out someone else.

Wow!

Congrats on getting it figured out! :D

I am keepig a copy for my records to help out others who may want to try the same thing.

How did you get it all figured out? (and thanks for posting the procedure back for the rest of us!)

Mark

I used to download ISOs all the time on 56k. It might take about 48 hours per CD, but it's worth it in the end.
