Backing Up Data...

Recommended Posts

Hello,

As I'm about to purchase a 12" PowerBook, I need to back up my data. However, there are a few items which I do not know how to back up. Here are some of the most important things.

Keychain: I'd like to know where the file is stored with all my Keychains on it.

Mail: I need to back up all my messages, folders, etc.

This is about it. If anybody know anything else I need to backup, it would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Also, if you've got a .Mac subscription the included Backup 2.0 utility makes it a brezze to backup all those horrible to find files, simply tick "Keychain" and it's done.

Only relevant if you've got .Mac of course.

Good ones...I need all three.

Edit: Nevermind, found all three.

There are export options in iCal and Address Book. For Safari, its /Users/*/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist.

iCal: ~/Library/Calendars/

Address Book: ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/

Safari: ~/Library/Safari/

For Safari, if you just want the bookmarks, get Bookmarks.plist, but if you want your history, downloads, etc. you'll probably want the entire directory.

If you're looking to backup, pretty much 90% of ~/Library holds your settings :)

Might as well grab the whole thing (although, might want to empty your Safari cache first) ;)

I've tried before, but I don't have permission to copy it onto my iPod and there's exactly 1 million folders and files to change permissions on in Library. ;)

Edit: Nevermind, I just didn't read the prompt the first time and automatically clicked cancel. It just wanted my pasword. ;)
