My Dog's Having Nightmares

Recommended Posts

This is NOT a joke and dammit if this turn into a flame fest I'm going to be ****ing ****ed!

My dogs, Jake and Molly.. Both still relativley young yorkies shake in their sleep and jerk if they are sleeping with me I notice it like down on the couch and molly makes whimpering sounds.

When she was younger.. I thought it was kind of funny at the time I was really young she fell into the skimmer on the poiol and maybe thats why she is having nighrmares like she won't go near the spa or pool unless no one is around then she'll ocassionaly get in on the first step vs. jake who will fall asleep in the spa. But I just want to know if this is normal, Thank you!

Don't worry - it's perfectly normal. Dogs dream just like humans do and this is how they manifest it.

I've always had dogs around me and every dog has done exactly what you are describing. When dogs dream sometimes they lie perfectly still and you'll just see their eyes moving (like when humans enter REM sleep). Other times they'll twitch and whimper and even make muffled barking sounds. They'll often wag their tails or twitch their legs as though they are running. I've seen this hundreds or thousands of times over the decades I've had dogs. Don't worry...

Its normal my dogs used to do it when they were young and when they were older they still have nightmares but thats nothing everyone has them!

About the pool thing, Dogs are silly little things there is nothing unusal about it not going in the pool when people are around. My dog she is very defensive about her food, you only have to walk near her and she'll run a mile with her food. Its all normal dogs are strange things but best friend a person can i have :)

Thank you people that made sensable comments!

For those select few I have few more questions..

Sorry I don't know much about dogs except well they're dogs

Molly won't go near the water anymore any way to coax her into it?

Molly also cleans Jake's eyes, and she'll use her paws like a cat and hold him down.

As nasty as it is will I ever get Jake to do it to Molly so that I don't have to pick it out of her eyes It drives me nasty.

Thanks All

3. It breaks no rules, he posted it in the right forum, if anything Keldyn will responed and try to help the guy LONG before he locks i:no:o: .

and last, it s nothing to worry about its perfectly normal for your dog (not you homer:yes:s:D:D

Maybe the jerking is because they are having naughty dreams ;)

I'd guess if an animal is smart enough to learn whether an experience is bad or good, it'll probably dream about it. I know my dogs feet twitch as she drifts off (I do that as well, i'll kick myself awake by dreaming i've just tripped over the kerb of a pavement. Always a wierd experience!)

I didn't really notice it as much with my cats, the just purred and dribbled a lot. I'm a cat guy tho so I don't want to think about them having nightmares ;)

Homer. You are annoying.

I have tw dogs now, just got the second. While my family loves the newer dog, I am pretty partial to the other, older dog. Every now and then I'll notice him barking and kicking his feet in his sleep. Sometimes it gets really bad so I just wake him to like get him out of it. IT all comes down to how people see dogs. If you view them as nothing more than a dumb animal, then this thread probably means nothing to you. That said, however, those of us who really care for our dogs, have a fuller understanding of rpm's concern.

Amen. I try not to wake em up but smoothly pet them like trying too soothe their pain it's not right so tiny yet so much twitching and muffled yelps.

My dog Jake also got attacked by a Racoon, It's pretty funny he tricked to pick a fight with it but luckily he is alright I kept telling em next time you'll get em! :D

my older dog has done it in the past, but hasn't done it recently. i have never noticed my younger dog do anything strange while sleeping, but of course, she doesn't sleep with me.

homer does have quite the attitude doesn't he?

Sorry I'm unable to answer that but how come she doesn't sleep with you? My dad doesn't like me sleeping with the dogs but they shouldn't be caged up all night long.. How would you like it if you were in that position heh.

Do Dogs Dream?

Your dog lies asleep at your feet, and suddenly his legs begin to twitch and run. Is he dreaming? Or are you dreaming to think such a thing? Wake up and smell the dog food! Of course he's dreaming. Why would you think otherwise?

Although no one really knows the true function of dreaming it does seem to be necessary for normal data processing and memory storage. Dogs think and they have memory. And their memory banks need period purging and reorganization during sleep just as ours do.

Dogs and humans are not as different as some scientists would have us believe. Scientists tend to dwell on the differences between the two species, whereas the sameness is positively compelling. We're 95 percent identical genetically and physically (right down to the iron-containing porphyrin ring our common blood pigment, hemoglobin). Because of this blue print similarity, you might expect a lot of the inner workings to be the same ?and they are. Our brains are similar, our neurochemistry is the same, and our reflexes and memory are "wired" in like manner.

I love my dogs alot. More than anita likes her cats.

NEVER!!!!!! :D

animals dream and shouldn't be bothered when they are sleeping (just like people). my cats dream a lot. you should have your dog checked for rabies if it got into a fight with a raccoon.

well, the older dog is titled as "my dog" while the younger dog is titled as my "moms dog." so, go figure. although, the younger dog does sleep with me from time to time. the bed gets rather crowded also. :(
