Delete the ClientRegistry.vob file and open steam and let it update itself again. If that fails, reinstall, one of the patches probably died.

Also, if it "freezes", try letting it freeze for a while, it might just be taking an insane amount of time to update, it happens.

No insult to anyone, but steam is just like every other program, some people know how to run it and not have problems, while some people crash all the time and are unable to run it at all.

I personally have had one problem which sounds exactly like frogs and thats how it was fixed, but if you check the steampowered forums, there are people who dont know what they're doing following bad advice, or are the type of person who kills system processes because they take up more ram than solitaire does.

Being a longtime CS player, and formerly the assistant league director of CAL, and tournament admin for the CPL, I've followed CS since the betas. Like any program, it has its bugs. People just make fun of steam because it was plagued with problems in the beginning. Valve really didn't have the foresight to realize that a million CS players would like to download the latest version on the same day and didn't have anywhere near as much bandwidth. That is one of the reasons HL2 was delayed was they had to make changes to the foundation of steam itself and how it works, they're actually going to P2P pretty soon so it will reduce the need for the strain on the content servers.

But in all fairness steam has had its share of serious, funny, and not-so-big bugs, and Valve has been good to step up and fix them, and I dont know what the Eric's were thinking when they put the riot shild in, but thats life I guess =]

The "steamless" 1.6 is not supported nor released by valve, its mainly for people who want to play on lan and have no internet connection.

I recently ran a large lan in colorado, EverLAN and was actually the first large scale (300+) lan to use steam with Valves permission and ran into a few problems in the beginning getting ports open (hotels problem, our lack of foresight, whatever), but we did have a nice connection to the internet =].
