How can I edit LILO/GRUB to add/remove entries ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, just a quickie, I done a quick search and found nothing of use to me.

I have RH9 & XP Installed, but my LILO boot screen is only showing LINUX and GRUB is only showing XP (I messed up during the install and edited the options).

How can I edit both LILO & Grub from within RH9? Is there a gui to do it or do I need a bash command ?

Thanks for the help ...

why do you have both? you should only have one really ;)

Have to agree. You are only booting with either LILO or GRUB.

Although, the first time I read that, I was thinking he was recommending ditching Windows, and single-booting Linux!

UPDATE:

When LILO starts, there are 5 entries on there

1) RH LINUX - 2.4.20-27.9smp

2) RH LINUX - 2.4.20-8bigmem

3) RH LINUX-SMP - 2.4.20-8smp

4) RH LINUX-UP - 2.4.20-8

5) Windows (Default)

Basicly I do not know which one to boot into and I would like to just keep the 1 entry I need (as well as the windows one)

If you are sure it's lilo, then edit /etc/lilo.conf

In case it turns out to be grub, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Of course, when dealing with your boot loader, be very, very careful. A Syntax error could leave you unable to boot anything!

Thanks, Ill try that, but what Kernal should I boot into as default ?

And the loader in question is GRUB 0.93

How can I change over to LILO

You'll probably want the 4th one unless you are running dual (or more processors), or have more than 4GB of RAM.

As for LILO, you'd have to download the RPM somewhere and install it. Then edit /etc/lilo.conf to the proper settings, and then run /sbin/lilo to install the bootloader to the MBR.

Sounds like there is question if you are using LILO or GRUB, but the one you want is probably #4

#1 is for SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processor)

#2 is for Obscene RAM (how much do you have?)

#3 is SMP again

#4 is Uni-Processor (you only have one CPU, right?)

#5 I never use. Got rid of that a year ago. :shifty:

If you have more than 886MB of memory I think you'll want to run the bigmem option.
