Default folder icon probs

Recommended Posts

I've found how to change the default folder icon (ended up using IconXP). Now my problem is that it worked great in all the folders except my favorites in Internet Explorer. The favorites in Windows explorer and on the start menu have the new icons, but not in IE.

I've tried rebooting a few times and rebuilding the icons with Tweak UI but it didn't make any difference. I've also noticed that they are the old icons in the file -> open -> browse box in all programs.

Any ideas?

man, as far as i know, the icons for the menus in ie or in other programs use another *.dll file. same the icons from opne/browse as you said.

the program u used changed only the icons in explorer. i heard about this issue, but i don't know what is to be done....i would try it with ressource hacker--- and the files? well, there must be some...i'll try to find it out, if i get it i will tell you...

maybe is someone outthere who knows it better....

Hmmm... I was afraid of something like that.

This may be way over my head. I can't find a place where it shows which file it could even be, let alone know how exactly to go about fixing it :(

Hopefully a very nice, knowledgable person will post a tutorial when they find it (yeah, yeah.. not a very subtle hint I know ;) )

OMG! I found it... first place I tried :)

That was almost too easy!

Just in case anyone else needs to do this, here's how:

IMPORTANT:

I am in no way responsible if this turns out bad for you for any reason, I'm just posting what I did in case anyone wants it.

Be sure to back up the file you're about to change and do a restore point just in case.

Open up ResHacker.

Open shell32.dll (should be in your windows/system32 folder)

Go down to icon group, folder 4... there it is.

Right click, change resource... choose whatever icon you want then save.

Windows will now complain that a system file has been altered and will want to restore it. Ignore this. It worked fine for me and no more annoying yellow folders :).

Thank you mariusu for mentioning a .dll, that's what made me look there :)

cool that you found it man...:)

but i have a question...are you sure this will do the thing, i mean...replacing these icons, changed the icons on your ie menus, or the save menus?:ermm: if yes, then i must say this is good...

i had the problem with win98, but there i found nothing to do. your result would be more than appreciated, since i'll definitively move over to xp soon (i fu**ed my old xp install when i installed pgp 7.03 and pgp disk and uninstalled it)

did it really work? :) :)

Yup, it changed it in the save as, favorites and browse menus. There is one thing I should point out, try to use one that is the same shape (ei, not smaller, tilted etc) because that makes the folders look strange when using the thumbnail view.

It also doesn't change the open folder color, that's a different icon in probably the same .dll. I haven't looked for that one yet (I don't have an open folder icon to match my new default one ;)). I'll look for that one later and post it when I find it.
