What do you mean WTF - you told to

"i said to install linux on the space that left"

What exactly do you NOT understand? It created a boot partition 100MB, a root 25G and then an extended partition to put its swap partition in. What do you not understand?? You TOLD it to use the space that was left on the drive!

Linux will need a min of 2 paritions - system and swap, you have a 3rd which is the boot parition, this is normal. You could have many more /var, /home, /etc, /usr - etc.. etc....

all i want to know is how did it use 25 mb  and there is 0mb free :p

I am not sure that Partition Magic knows enough about ext format to tell what is "in use" and what is not.

Partition Magic is a Windows-Only Program. It doesn't run in Linux, so they figured that teh average Windows user doesn't care about ext format very much.

Plus, all it takes to find out about your Linux drives is to boot Linux, and type "df" to see what your disk freespace is. ;)

can someone also tell me how to install my modem ?

Well, you do know that you probably have a "winmodem". That is, it is missing a lot of stuff that makes it operate like a REAL modem. It counts on Windows providing the rest of its functionality. :pinch: This is how Microsoft provides a means to lock-in users to Windows, encourage hardware vendors to make Windows-only devices..

Now, you are not necessarily out of luck. Check out http://linmodems.org to see if they provide support (reverse-engineered, or vendor-supplied operational data) for your modem.

Remember, if your modem doesn't work, it is because Microsoft pushed the modem vendors this way, not that Linux can't run a modem (Linux does run a REAL modem very well!).

It doesn't mean that at all. A Winmodem is more of a nickname for a Software modem, which requires a software controller to operate it. Unfortunately, most of the software is only available for Windows, but it's not a Microsoft conspiracy.

Calm down? I told him what the partitions were, and that he told the setup to do exactly what it did.

What drugs are you on? Or did you forget to take your meds this morning?

Didn't Microsoft propose this to the modem manufacturers, supposedly as a "cost reduction" for them? (and, of course any manufacturer will JUMP on a chance to reduce costs & increase profits!)

And, since Microsoft provides the software that replaces much of the firmware of the modem, the hardware is essentially "locked-in" to the Windows platform.

This is an excellent example of Microsoft manipulating hardware to promote "lock-in".

BudMan,

Your response did seem a little "abrupt" to someone who was obviously a noob (and obviously didn't read up on what was involved in a Linux install).

I know, I get a little annoyed by the same questions over and over (and sometimes over again), but I jut try to remember when I first installed Linux.

Microsoft can't force vendors to not write Linux drivers.

True..... But up until recently, there wasn't much of a market for Linux drivers for modems. Actually, as far as vendors are concerned, there is still no need for Linux drivers.

Because in most people's eyes, Linux still doesn't rate as a desktop operating system, and Winmodems are targetted at the desktop user.

Budman...

Nevermind to my earlier post...

I see that you and kemical have a bit of back-and-forth on some of the other boards...

Mark - I fail to understand why people continue to read into my posts?

I stated the FACTS, gave him some additional info. How else would you have me word it? I was asking what he does NOT understand about what he did - he stated that he told linux to use the rest of the space. ALL I did was point that out to him, and ask what he did not understand about that.

Eactly what "TONE" should I use?? I am not here to baby people, and if you do so - they come back and say you do not have treat them like an idiot!

Yes I am tired of reading the SAME posts over and OVER again, and I may snap out a response now and then. But if you read into my post anything other than what is written (ie TONE) like it seems kemical likes to do (WHAT A D_CK - BTW - hehehehe) <--- I want that to be clear, so you do not have to read anything into my TONE - ROFL!!! That is NOT my fault, nor my intention.

If you did NOT do anything STUPID, then my responses will NOT reflect that - nor could you read that into them. Be assured that I call them like I see them. And yes it is very frustrating with the constant flood of repeat questions - or even worse the parrot like repeating of useless if not completly WRONG advice or information is quite annoying!!

But I do NOT post with an intent of some underlying snide attitude - I give advice using my experience and knowledge of "IT", which I have aquired over the past 25 some years - being that I live and breath "IT", it is my bread and butter - along with my hobby (more of a passion really). I deal with users every single day - does it some time get to the point that you want to slap them up side the head - sure it DOES!

Anyone that has to deal with users, and not felt this now and then - has not dealt with users long enough ;) Don't worry - it will come.

Just so you know, Partition Magic is made to handle all types (except Mac, of course) of file systems. They have a wizard to install a new OS, and one of the OSs you can choose is Linux...

And BudMan, I totally agree ;) Although I still am only a student in HS, my dad is an IT guy for Pepsi and I've gone to work with him many times... Enough to know what you're talking about. Plus, only my dad, a couple of uncles, and I are the only ones in the family who are computer-savvy, so I have to deal with that too :)
