giga Veteran Posted January 4, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 4, 2004 I never crack my knuckles. Don't know why.
kak
It will make swelling of the joints though. When you crack your knuckles, you release that air that holds a small gap between the bones. They rub together a little bit, and your knuckles swell just a bit. It can hurt a little, depending on your age. If you do it when you're in a growth spurt, it hurts like hell. I crack my back all the time, and it hurt like everything my sophomore year in high school. Now I'm a freshman in college and it doesn't bother me at all. MxxCon
not a good idea to crack your neck or back..unlike fingers, if something goes wrong there you can be paralyzed for life.

altezza Veteran Posted January 4, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 4, 2004 I did that at certain times but not too much. I know it will weaken the bones and joints at later age. But it is something that I cannot miss doing it :D
jymi
i crack my knucles, knees, ankles wrists and pretty much everthing else by the time i get arthiritis they will have a cure .. hopefully
Wizdon
According to HowStuffWorks.com, it will not cause arthritus, but will cause you to have weaker grip, especially if you continually crack your fingers. However, immediately after the crack, the joint will have increased mobility.
axis
Exactly what Wizdon said, all the pop is is just trapped air.
ring0
all i know is that if i inhale and arch my back just right, i can pop/crack everything in sequence: knuckles, wrists, elbows, shoulders and my upper back (right between the shoulders, where i'm usually super-tense). looks really intimidating when done properly :D i've been trying to quit, though, just because i think it's another bad habit i need to drop. CatnipOligarchy
the fluid transfer causes the pop. my anatomy teacher used the analogy of squeezing the middle of a water baloon and forcing all the water to one side, then pushing on the side with the water until it suddenly rushes to the other side, she said its the same way with the knuckes - i believe its synovial fluid, could be wrong there. she said it does not cause arthritis, but in some cases, it has been shown to slighty limit the flexibility of the fingers in older people
.Neil
When you wake up and your knees crack once you stand up and your back cracks....is that a sign that I am an out-of-shape fat ass? Or do many inshape people have that too?
Mark Otto
Beh, I've already got arthritis, so it doesn't matter much to me. :) that sucks... im well on my way to it or i have it already...every morning i have to crack my knuckles and wait a few minutes before i can actually use them. on top of that i have tendonitis in my wrist. been cracking knuckles since the 3rd grade. :pinch:
