Hurmoth
O.K., this question has probably been asked before ... but I'm new to Mac so bear with me! Can I build my own computer and install Panther on it as long as all the hardware is Mac compatable?
Bling3k12
In a nutshell, no. There is a computer that TerraSoft Solutions makes that uses a PPC based motherboard and CPU, and I remember hearing somewhere that it would run the Mac OS, except it's through Mac On Linux. Here's one of them: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/briQ/
Hurmoth
Darn, see ... I just built me two computers and I really don't want to spend money on a new computer, so I was hoping that maybe I could buy a copy of Panther and install it on my Athlon 64, but oh well ... thanks anyway! Rhapsody/YellowBox DR2 X86/PPC this will work on a PC, but it is very hard to find however this is not saying how to get it, it is just stating that it exists. frod
O.K., this question has probably been asked before ... but I'm new to Mac so bear with me! Can I build my own computer and install Panther on it as long as all the hardware is Mac compatable? sure, but the only mobos/cpus that are "mac compatible" are the mobos/cpus that apple sells in their computers ;)
xRKx
...buy a copy of Panther and install it on my Athlon 64... Even if you -could- do it - that counts you out right there, as the Athlon 64 isn't Mac compatible! ^_^ Sure, you can buy parts and build your own Mac though - just get parts like Frod just said - that are Apple's. I've known a person who's actually built his own Mac systems by buying the individual components on eBay. The end result cost him more than buying a complete system used, but he just wanted to do it. (Yeah, some of my friends need reality checks.)
Hurmoth
Well thanks for the help anyway guys! Hey, just wondering ... if I tried to install Panther on it, what would happen?
Bling3k12
I'm gonna give it a good chance that when you put the CD in, absolutely nothing will happen...

xRKx
Hey, just wondering ... if I tried to install Panther on it, what would happen? You wouldn't be able to run Panther on it, anyway, for a multitude of reasons. A single, obvious one is binary incompatibility between the two platforms. Another is the fact that Panther (and other MacOSes,) do things like query your computer hardware, looking for specific Mac ROMs. (At least older versions of Mac OS did.) You're trying, essentially, to put an Xbox game in your PS2 and have it work. Or a DVD into your audio CD player.
