My system is on that list of effected systems. Ever since installing mandrake, my CDROM drive f***ed. Thinking that there was no way a program, malicious or not, could break a CDROM drive, I opened it up, decided it was f***ed and threw it out. Then I read that story. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could have saved it. GOD DAMNIT! GOD DAMN THOSE F***ING CDROM MAKERS! LG OFFICIALLY SUCKS!

Was this not posted late OCT timeframe on /. ? And your just now finding out? The Mandrake errata dated Mon Nov 24 11:26:27 2003 - has specific info about it. So who is to blame for you not hearing about this?

This is true, it could be worse, I could have paid for this computer (I found it in the trash). Maybe I can find another CDROM drive somewhere in the trash.

Edit: I have been to a few forums revolving around Mandrake and none of them had this news. The post about it on neowin is quite a few pages back.

btw, Im not blaming this on anyone except LG. I mean, for a program to make it crap out, that is just plain sad. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

Keywords: some time ago. Im not ****ed off at anyone in specific (except LG), im mostly just ****ed off. Throwing out a CDROM drive that could have been fixed with a obnoxious procedure.

The CDROM drive didn't burst into flames when I installed Mandrake or anything (which would make a good video), it just stopped responding completely. I unplugged and plugged it in, I took it apart, I hit it. If I had just known sooner...

Get mad @ lg because they broke rule #1 when designing hardware. Software should NEVER break it. Back in the really old days some monitors broke if you gave it the wrong frequencies but i've never seen something like this happen. Even the hardware i've designed has never had this problem.

I can't believe you didn't find out. Wasn't there a nice warning message somewhere on the mandrake site or on the CD. They shoulda been more clear about that.

If I understand Pseudo's problem... It isn't that the CD-ROM was blanked...

It is that he took it apart, and threw it away...

The procedure for that involves going to the landfill, I think. :pinch:

Blame it on the Penguin. LG is just fine.

And how exactly does not following the Atapi specification, or even plain common sense of not reusing commands for other functions - ie in this case flush_cache (if I remember correctly from this old news) on LG's part. Make this a penguin issue??

I hear a little bird telling you 'switch to a better distro, switch to a better distro, one with i686 architecture....'

But that may just be my inner penguin speaking.

Oh no no no, sorry, I figured out how to install Mandrake from the hard drive. In fact, I posted instructions on this forum. I when thru hell figuring it out though. If I did that to learn/install Mandrake, a cheep ****ant CDROM fudging because of a crappy maker is not going to stop me, oh no. Its not fair to count this against Mandrake (or any OS) because it was not deliberate and hardware like a CDROM drive should not fail because of any type of software.

Maybe one day there will be a virus that disables CDROM drives using this method

Yeah...that'll teach LG.

Yes, I missed the story by a day. After hearing about it, I looked through the trash just to make sure. It was gone. Nothing I can do.
