Last September we put a call out to PS4 owners to test out our next system software update and since we’re getting close to the release of our next update for PS4, we wanted to do it again! Starting today you can sign up to be a beta tester and get a sneak peek at some of the features making their way to your PS4.

The beta program will kick off in early March, and if you’re part of the program, you’ll receive an email with instructions on downloading the system software. You can roll back to the previous system software at any time, so don’t worry about downloading the beta. In order to sign up, you’ll need a PS4 with an Internet connection and a master account. We’ll share more details on the new features you’ll be able to test when the beta begins.

Our beta program for PlayStation 4’s next major system software update, version 3.50 (codenamed MUSASHI), kicks off tomorrow. If you signed up for the beta and were selected, keep an eye on your email for instructions on downloading.

Regardless of whether you’re in the beta, we wanted to detail some of the key features we’re adding to PS4 in this update. We’re making it easier to play together with friends and adding the ability to appear offline when you’d rather play solo.

New Social Features

Friend Online Notification – Want to know the moment your friends come online? With this update, you can, as we’ve added an option to be notified when members of your friends list sign on the network.
Appear Offline – Sometimes you want to play a game or watch a movie without being bothered by friends. Now it’s easier to go incognito as we’ve added the option to appear offline. You can designate if you would like to appear offline when you log-in or at any time from your Profile or the Quick Menu.
User Scheduled Event – Time for a play date! We’ve added the ability to schedule a future gameplay session with your friends on the system. When your event starts, users who registered for the event will automatically be added to a party so you can start playing right away.
Play Together – This features allows all members of a Party to see what each person is playing so that you can easily join a friend’s game, or start a new game together.

Other New System Features

Remote Play (PC/Mac) – We’re bringing PS4 Remote Play to Windows PC and Mac. This feature won’t be available to test in the beta, but you can look forward to it soon.
Dailymotion – With this update, you’ll be able to live stream directly to Dailymotion on PS4. We’ll also support archiving live broadcasts, like we do for other streaming services.

Stay tuned for more details on MUSASHI, including additional key features and its release date.

Have been able to do this in party chat since I can remember or is there some other aspect of this? :s

I assume Remote Play for PC and Mac means Sony is going to officially support the DualShock 4 on Windows and Mac?

I know it's not too hard to get a DualShock working in Windows (no idea about mac) but every way I'm aware of requires unofficial 3rd party software to be installed.  While not a HUGE deal it would be nice to have OFFICIAL support for the controller in Windows. (Official support for the DualShock in Android would be nice as well)

lol.

I tried the Windows remote play thing. I cannot see myself using it much because it looks pretty bad. Even on all the highest settings over a wired connection it's pretty bad.

Most likely, but there are no patch notes yet :p

I wonder if they'll add anything cool when they round up to 5.00. Getting close now!

The PlayStation Network is down for certain games
      by Usama Jawad

Microsoft's Xbox Live service had an outage yesterday, resulting in gamers facing problems in connecting to it. This caused failed purchases, inability to sign in for some users, issues in launching certain games, and unavailability of xCloud gaming. While Microsoft was able to resolve the problem in six hours, it did admit that the fix took longer than anticipated to apply.

Today, it's the PlayStation Network's turn which appears to be down for several games.

According to Sony's dedicated network service status page, the PlayStation Network is facing issues in the "gaming and social" category. This affects the PlayStation Vita, 3, 4, and 5. The company cautions that:

It's unclear exactly how widespread the problem is, but the status appears to be the same across most regions including the US, UK, and Canada. Engadget reports that while some games like Fortnite and Fall Guys work just fine, players are having issues connecting to others such as Call of Duty: Warzone, Minecraft, Destruction AllStars, and Don't Starve Together.

The issue was officially confirmed by Sony on 6:33PM ET, but earlier reports point to it appearing on 1PM ET, which essentially means that it's been almost 12 hours since the partial outage began. It's currently unclear when a fix will be rolled out, but you can keep an eye on the network service status page for updates in the meantime.

Colorful action game titled Sifu revealed at State of Play
      by Namerah Saud Fatmi

Sony and Soclap have jointly unveiled a new action title slated to arrive on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles. According to the game's website, it will also land on PC via the Epic Games Store. Duly christened Sifu, the game features a colorful world and hand-to-hand combat.

Sifu was unveiled at the State of Play virtual event held today. The PlayStation and PC title plays from a third-person perspective and follows the story of a young man who is a Kung Fu student. Revenge and martial arts appear to be some of the main themes of the upcoming title.

A summary of the game's storyline reads:

Although the announcement trailer highlights martial arts, the blurb for Sifu on its website states that players will be able to use assorted weapons as well. Some of them are detailed to be "throwable objects" and "makeshift weapons".

As of right now, no exact release date for the action game has been disclosed. All we know now is that Sifu will come out sometime in 2021.

Oddworld: Soulstorm due out April 6, set to join PS Plus in April
      by Namerah Saud Fatmi

The next installment in the Oddworld franchise was revealed quite a while back in June last year. Titled Oddworld: Soulstorm, the platform game will continue the storyline of 2014 title Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty. At the time, no exact launch date for the eccentric game was revealed.

Today at the State of Play event, Sony took the wraps off of the release date. Oddworld: Soulstorm hits the store on April 6, 2021. It will arrive on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via the Epic Games Store.

Members of the monthly PlayStation Plus service get two free titles for the PlayStation 4 and one free title for the PlayStation 5 each month as long as they are active subscribers. In a surprise move, developer and publisher Oddworld Inhabitants revealed that Oddworld: Soulstorm will be April's free PS5 title for PS Plus subscribers.

PlayStation 5 users will experience immersive gameplay due to haptic feedback on the DualSense controller. Players will be able to feel the heartbeat of the game's protagonist, Abel during gameplay.

Currently, pre-orders are only open for the PC version of Oddworld: Soulstorm. Those interested in pre-purchasing the title can head to the Epic Games Store where it is priced at $19.99.
