murr
i am looking forward to experiencing my first distro of linux. i was hoping to attempt an install of fedora but i am having a problem. i boot off of cd1 it asks me a bunch of questions. i pretty much leave everything the default except the packages. i leave network settings to the default of dhcp, i tell it to delete all partitions, it finds all my hardware just fine. was very happy about that. found my hp 1702 monitor, radeon 7000. woohoo. the problem i am having is when it gets to the format screen. it tells me there was an error and i will have to reboot. i have tried that so many times and the same thing happens. my computer consists of a p4 1.8, 1gb of sdram, radeon 7000, dvd+/-r/rw, tdk cdrw, soundblaster audigy, linksys nic, and 80 gb wd hd. i have tried different hard drives and i am still having this problem. i'm downloading rh9 now just in case fedora won't work. i am really looking forward to trying linux. any help would be deeply appreciated. thanks.
bsquirle
Maybe you could try to put the linux partitions on your disk before installing Linux. (with software like partition magic from powerquest)
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 5, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 5, 2004 Maybe you could try to put the linux partitions on your disk before installing Linux.(with software like partition magic from powerquest) Yikes! You shouldn't have to do that (or particularly want to do that). I generally have had less luck with pre-partitioning, and prefer to let the distro partition the disk itself. However, since you are having problems, give it a try. Or, download a drive diagnostics program from Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, whomever, and see if that sees any problems with your hard drive. It could also be that you are having IDE problems on your Motherboard.. :(
murr
don't think i'm having ide problems cause i'm using the same computer now for winxp. i take out my winxp hdd and tried different hdd's when trying to install fedora. i keep getting that message. i actually finished installing rh9 a little while ago without any problems. any other suggestions? would really like to check out fedora. markwolfe Veteran Posted January 6, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 6, 2004 Hmmm... I would get the exact error messages and see if they are known issues with Fedora. If they are not known issues, I would gather your system info (all hardware models, and configurations), and submit a bug report. They may find there is a real issue with certain combinations of hardware. Definately Google your exact faults, and see what may be the problem (as I am sure that someone else has ran into these faults before... Odd that RH9 worked, though. I suppose you could try an "upgrade" from RH9 to Fedora, and see if that works. It may do the install differently enough to avoid the problem installing FC1 out of the box.
