carlo
Hi I am looking at designing a new games site for an A level project. I just wondered what the most important things are to make a good gaming site. Any comments welcomed Thanks
Long
Huge headers that take up more room than the browser, so you'll have to scroll right. Really large and green text, and all on a white background. Lots of pictures that are for black backgrounds and use them on white background, gota have those big emboss borders around them. Keep up with lots of scrolling text everywhere. And those things that follow your mouse cursor. And like a Jingle Bells background music. You can't go wrong with those. rekka
Without a doubt what Long said, I mean I can't argue with that level of genius. But as well, try and do something different. There are a million 'general gaming sites' you'd be better off to concentrate on something in particular of give it a twist to make it different. Ash
And as much blinking text as you can squeeze in!
toadeater
Yeah, make sure everything is blinking, put in Flash everywhere, make sure the colors help promote seizures and/or blindness. If the site gets popular, start charging for demos, screenshots and movies that you claimed would be available free. Oh yeah, lastly, always accept bribe $$$ from publishers to give ****ty games good reviews.
SimplyPotatoes
since all these people are so helpful.... kind of a hard question carlo, i suggest visting a bunch of the game sites already out there, for me though i prefer detailed review, some ****ty sites just review a games multiplay or maybe comment on the graphics, so deep and well done reviews are great, also readability is another big one, people are not going to want to read or view something for a long time on a website which isnt eye friendly(eg contrast text annoying graphics, the things these idiots above me are being sarcastic about)

cpu killer
When making a gaming site, you must think: 1) Why would someone go to your site, instead of others? 2) Whys yours different, what makes it better, unique? 3) How does it compete witht the other sites of its own class? 4) Is it a community-based site, or content-based site? 5) News. News , on the spot, is ALWAYS important, people visit sites for news. 6) If it is a community site, try and manage a nice community, like neowin :). Thats about as much advice as i can give you...Just think: "What would make someone visit my site, instead of <INSERT NAME OF OTHER SAME-LEVEL SITE HERE>"... Ofcourse u wont compare urself to like gamepsy or IGN, thats just riddiculous :p. Thatd be like starting a small time hardware review site and comparing myself to neowin.. LOL! Eli
I'm sorry but those other comments make me laugh. Yet that's how most sites are sometimes. Another useless hint which I'm surprised no one has said yet is to use the 'site builder' that comes with Geocities or Angelfire. EVERYONE loves sites that are built with that. No on a serious note, I also suggest visiting other sites and looking there.
