Directx

Depends on whether or not the games you play require newer versions or not. If they don't you can leave it alone, just to be safe.

Sometimes, newer driver releases from either NVidia or ATI require newer versions of directx to be installed.

But if currently everything works ok then there's not much reason to upgrade.

Sometimes it does hurt to upgrade as well as to patch... if you dont need it, dont put it.

Anybody remembers that infamous patch for winxp that killed the network connection?

Or what about the lateste upgrade of w98se? (winMe)

so, not always upgrade is better.......

I've never been much of a gamer, but I'm just wondering if there would be any point to upgrading my dx? I currently have 8.1 on a GeForce2 MX400

Some newer games may require DirectX9

If so make sure you install DirectX 9.0b from the web rather than the copy that came with the game (since the original DirectX9 has a vulnerability) unless you know for sure that game includes 9.0b

I would expect that there would be little point in upgrading to DirectX9 unless you have a game that requires it.

That being said, I've upgraded my computer to DirectX9 and I don't think I have anything that needs it.

It all depends on how comfortable you are with installing, uninstalling and using System Restore.

I used to have one of those cards (currently running GeForce 4 Ti 4800, which ASUS says is optimised for use under DX9), and I installed Direct X 9 for it when it was released. There definitely was better performance.

Remember that Direct X is a general interface for all hardware, and I am yet to hear of a graphics card that is direct x incompatible.

There is no harm in updating to DirectX 9.0b

To go offtopic, is there an ETA on Direct X 10 yet?

Rule of Thumb: in order to upgrade, you have to know the game of upgrading.

Keep all your bases covered. Backup! Backup! Backup! Then, have a way to restore your settings if anything goes awry. System Restore is the universal way, but ghosting and imaging with other software is the best. Then, experiment (safely, as you don't want to lose anything) The best way to game is to get the best outta your system and you won't unless you experiment.

All in all, it just won't hurt to upgrade dude, as long as your careful and know what you're doing.

Cheers
