boonedog
Can anyone explain how to remove the Internet Gateway from network connections? I have two comps connected to the internet by a router and one has just local area connection and the other has Internet Gateway and local area connection. Both are running XP Pro and I've tried the network wizard and it won't take it off. The comp that has it was not hooked up when I installed XP. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Sarge
are you using ICS? If you are sharing a connection using ICS, then that is the way it is.
boonedog
no im not sharing a connection on this machine. Maybe thats what I don't understand. If its directly connected to internet through a router why would it be there. The only thing different is when I loaded XP on the machine it was not connected versus the other was. So when I first tried to connect to the internet it asked how would I like to connect and I configured it that way but connection through a lan was not an option available on the list. The only options where through dsl or cable, dial up, and find an isp. (something like that). It really doesn't effect anything that I know but when I go to network connections I would like for it to not be there.
JustinLerner
Most connections in Network and Dial-Up Connections will be Local Area Connections (Ethernet) and modem and special connections like VPN. I don't believe in this area you should see something like Internet Gateway. However, in the Local Area Connection itself, you should have either a static IP address or the PC should get one dynamically (automatically) from a DHCP server (like your DSL/cable router if that feature is turned on). If you use a DSL/Cable modem Router, both PC's should have a Gateway specified in the Local Area Connection settings. The Gateway address should be the local IP address of your DSL/Cable modem Router. I haven't heard of an Internet Gateway setting in the Network and Dial-Up Connections, but if there is an Internet Gateway Connection as an alternate connection to the internet on your XP PC this may be set with security features if you have a corporate VPN or other connection to resources on the internet. Otherwise, if this 'connection' appears in the Network . .. .Connections and you don't need it, you can just delete it.
