Blue & White G3 Upgrading ?'s

Recommended Posts

hello all.

i have a good freind who is the definition of slacker, and i want to help him out cause he is/can/should be an incredible designer.

since it has been years and years literally since i have had or even been on a blue and white g3, before i help him out i just seek some expert advise / words of wisdom from those who either have one of these g3's and or from those who did have either of the following.

1) my first question is according to the apple website he should be able to install Panther on his comp. so has anyone tried installing panther on one of these comps and if so how does it run? is there anything you would suggest doing to the comp? such as a adding more ram, will his processor handle it, etc.? (don't know his exact specs but im assuming they are stock and am trying to get them from him right now via email) I would much rather hear from real world users "i have installed it and it works pretty good" then read an apple tech spec sheet or the min requirements on the side of the Panther Box saying it should work.

2) he has a whopping 12 gig hard drive, and i am looking to install a new secondary one for him of at least 40. i also did some research on this as well on the apple site and it looks like all he needs is an Ultra ATA drive and it should be good to go.

Since I cannot open his comp and since he lives far away and when i do go and see him it is to hopefully install the drive for him, the main question I have is there is an additional expansion slot easily available for me to install this drive i am assuming correct? and does the ATA ribbon cable in the mac by default have an extra connector for the secondary drive or do i have to supply a ribbon cable for him and are the they same as windows ATA ribbon cables?

i just do not want to tell my friend i am helping him and have him go spend money if i cannot do the above two things.

thats really it, and both myself and really my friend the slacker would appreciate it, and thanks in advanced (Y)

1. I would say go with at least 256MB of ram, but 512MB would be sweet for it. It will run slow, yes, but it an older system though. :) He should find a Radeon 7000 32MB PCI video card and get the quartz extreme hack to speed up the interface as well. :)

2. Yes, most UATA drives should work. Be VERY careful with the B&W G3's though, if he has a revision 1 motherboard, he will run into problems with a second hard drive hooked up as their is a problem plaguing the chipset. The revision 2 does not have this problem.

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/yosemite/IDE/index.html Check that out on more information regarding this issue with data corruption with revision 1 boards. It'll also show you how to add/replace a hard drive. Without knowing the revision of the board or if the case is a revision 1 or 2 case, it is hard to tell what is inside of it.
