ekoostic
Ok guys here goes. My girlfriend came home from school on college break and wanted to reformat her computer and put all new 10.3 on it and everything. So we went out and got an 80gb external HD and 10.3. Its a iMac G3 with 392mb ram. So I partioned it off so she could have 9.x and 10.3 on different partitions. So I deleted the formatted the drive and left the partitions be and installed 10.3. It works awesome but I remebered that with Windows you have to install older OS's before you install the newer ones even if they are on different partitions. So all the important stuff is backed up on the external and we have 10.3 up and running awesome but I cannot figure out how to put 9.2.1 on if that is even possible. And thats why I come to you. I know nothing about how Macs work but I have gotten this far and I don't wanna have to restart and start from the beginning. I need to find a way to install a Classic operating system on the other partition without reformatting the OSX partition. I dunno if this even makes sense but I really hope that someone can help. We are running into problems where she is trying to open programs and they are saying they need Classic to open. Its not like .doc stuff either, its like stuff that was written for a program that only works in Classic. So I have a G3 Imac backup disc and a G4 Powerbook backup disc. I read that if you press C when starting it would boot from the CD but that hasn't happened. If someone can help me figure this out I would be greatful! Thanks -Keith-

the evn show
A G3 of that era should have came with OS 9 install media. Place the CD in the CD-Rom. Reboot Hold C (to boot from the CD-Rom) install OS 9 - when given the option of where to install it, choose the partition you want to use. OS 9 and OS X are both designed to work on new-world macs. OpenFirmware should be controling what you book. You can choose which OS is the default by using the startup-disks preferences pain in either OS (so you can change it to os x if os 9 becomes the new default). Once it's installed you'll probably have to tell os x where the classic environment exists through the classic preferences pane - that should be relatively simple. Southern Patriot
I read that if you press C when starting it would boot from the CD but that hasn't happened. If someone can help me figure this out I would be greatful! Thanks-Keith- I occasionally have this problem with my PowerBook. I think it's due to the CD drive not spinning up in time to be recognized as a bootable CD. Try holding down the option key instead of C. That will give you a boot menu with all bootable devices listed. If the CD doesn't show up at first, press the refresh button (looks like a curved arrow pointing to the left) on that screen a couple times. If the CD is in fact bootable, it will eventually show up. Then just select it and press the button that looks like a right arrow. That will continue the boot.
