(mac) iChat menu extra edit

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone with dev tools could poke around in the iChat menu extra file and see if there is a way to change it so that it shows idle buddies along with the online ones instead of solely online. I have been using iChat lately and it would be great to use the menu extra solely instead of the buddy list. I have a 12" powerbook so screen real estate is expensive compared to menus.

I can tell you without looking that it's not possible. That sort of thing would require hacking the code that builds the menu, and the source isn't open.

check out fire or adium, they are alternatives to ichat that connect to aim. you could still use ichat for rendezvous/ichat av if you had an isight or wanted to talk to people on your lan.

 thank you for that. Did you not read my post? I have gone back to iChat. I obviously like it because I want another feature of the buddy list in the menu bar, none of which proteus, adium, or fire have.

i didn't see that you had used any others lately, although i guess maybe that was implied and i just missed it when you said you had been using ichat lately. sorry.

Adium is the only other app that has a menu bar item like iChat, and it works the same way, but you could change it because the source is open.

Somebody could probably write a new menu bar item if they wanted that showed this stuff, there are a lot of programs that interface with iChat, so I am sure it could be done.
