cpu killer
Sorry, Halo was simply not made to be optimized :p. Try lowering resolution and quality, its just a buggy game..
datr
OK if youre using Halo v.1.03 it comes with a hidden anistropic filtering option and seeing as how you already probably have it turned on which causes it to happen twice which can cause serious performance issues. So open up config.txt in your halo install directory find any instances of "UseAnisotropicFilter" and just put two forward slashes (//) behind it. You can also try creating a shortcut to halo.exe then using one of the following extensions at a time and see if any give you any performance gain: -useff Forces the game to run as a fixed function card. -use11 Forces the game to run as a shader 1.1 card. -use20 Forces the game to run as a shader 2.0 card. And finally theres settings tweaking which is basicly trial and error. First you should choose a good resolution your card should be able to handle 1024x768 but if you want it as smooth as possible you can try 800x600. Try setting your refresh as low as possible (around 60) then set your frame rate to VSYNC this will match your refresh rate and should give you a smooth play view. You can try steadily increasing the refresh rate if you think your system can handle it or if its stil lagging set your frame rate to 30fps and try that. Also obviously you can gain performance boosts by turning off or lowering the special effects shown underneah the settings already shown.
OptiPlex
Use Pixel Shader 1.4 first. If you still don't like the performance, use 1.1. I heard 2.0 shaders really cause a hit in performance in Halo

Batfink
2.0 Shaders should work ok on ATI 9700+ but I didn't know about the filtering addition in patch 1.3 Thx'z for that. I ain't overly happy with Microsoft with this game. Its a bit like the original GTA3... Poorly converted to the PC format, hopefull Halo 2 will be better. Its an awsome game though, 10 hours of continual game play and I have just got the libary back to the Halo control room, and disabled the first power station... Lots of fragging (and 3 Degree Final Exams) to go. Leebobs
datr
It works on my system great, but my system is brand new: AMD Athlon 2800XP 2x 512MB DDR 2700 (clocked down to match the FSB of the CPU) with double DDR Rate enabled (so double abndwidth) 120GB 150 SATA 7200rpm + 8mb cache ATi Radeon 9800 Pro I'm prooud. :D :p The library is a great level, I love using the shotgun on that level. matt74441
It works great on my system now, but it was a bit frustrating getting it to work. I'm being forced to use the Catalyst 3.6 drivers, because Halo doesn't like any of the new ones. So when HL2 comes out, no more Halo for me.
