PseudoRandomDragon
I have an Acomdata USB 40G Hard drive (Fat32) and I would like advice on getting it to work with Mandrake. What do I need to do to mount it? Right now, everything else but the USB HD is working great with Mandrake.

jonfr
connect it, find the /dev/xxx eantry for it, mount it, by doing this mount -t vfat /dev/xxx /mnt/usb-drive (xxx=your usb hard drive entry...)
PseudoRandomDragon
Thanks very much. I will try that and see how it goes.
PseudoRandomDragon
The hard drive was sda1. I ran the command as you said, replacing xxx with sda1 and it gave the message that it needs a mount point or something like that. What is a mount point and would setting one cause any problems for my USB HD?
dougkinzinger
How to make it work in Linux: Connect it, find the /dev/xxx eantry for it, mount it, by doing this mount -t vfat /dev/xxx /mnt/usb-drive (xxx=your usb hard drive entry...) How to make it work in Windows XP: Plug 'er in.
PseudoRandomDragon
It was not that simple for Windows, if anything it is harder. I had to install drivers for the HD in Windows, then I needed to right click my comptuer, select properties,go to the drive, select properties, check off "removable" for the drive, select a drive letter and restart. Entering a few things in command line is much simpler, no driver installation needed. Its a shame that Acomdata does no provide instructions, which is the reason why I am posting here. PseudoRandomDragon
...so in addition to my question on what a mount point is, do I need to do anything to make the drive be mounted every time the computer boots up or is it automatic? dougkinzinger
Yes that does suck about Acomdata not giving you instructions. For stuff like that, I try to stick with a reputable company whom I know has good support, but as long as it works for you, that's all that matters. kjordan2001
Did you create the folder to mount it to?

PseudoRandomDragon
Oh thats what mount point means, creating a directory to mount it to. No, I did not do that but I will. It would be a lot easier if they called it "mount directory", but at least I know now.
PseudoRandomDragon
I'm not having much luck with this. I looked at the drive using Mandrake control center and, well, I posted a pic of what it shows at the bottom.
