linux on external drive

Recommended Posts

Short Answer: Yes.

Long Answer: (actually, additional questions)

  • Do you want to boot off of the external drive?
  • Is a boot floppy OK to access Linux?
  • Do you want to do this through a 'virtual PC'?

Ensure that the BIOS supports booting off of a USB drive. Otherwise it is not possible.

Is that true even if you use a boot floppy?

If his BIOS does not support it, he could load the drivers for USB HD from a floppy, but that would mean having to boot from a floppy every time he wanted to load Linux from the USB HD. That is, if you could even load such a thing from a floppy. For his BIOS to support it, it would have to be a fairly new computer. If its two years old or more, chances of it supporting booting off a USB HD is extreamly unlikely.
