Jackson County [MI] judge tosses robe, helps restrain defendant

Told ya we have interesting judges in MI.

While waiting to testify I once witnessed a judge literally dive over his bench to help restrain a miscreant.

More than a few carry a sidearm under their robes.

Jackson County judge tosses robe, helps restrain defendant

JACKSON, Mich.   A Michigan judge who threw off his robe and helped restrain a defiant man in his courtroom says he was concerned about the safety of the man and a court officer.

The incident involving Jackson County Circuit Court Judge John McBain took place last December during a hearing about a personal protection order violation. McBain had just ordered the man to jail, but the man resisted efforts by the officer to handcuff him.

McBain told the Jackson Citizen Patriot that the man was "totally disturbing the decorum of the court." The newspaper published video of the confrontation online.

Jackson County Chief Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson says McBain's actions were allowable. Wilson says: "A judge has the power to take whatever action is necessary to maintain order in the courtroom."

I know him personally. Really good guy, but when he's "on the job" he's all business. He'll give almost anyone a second chance (addicts especially, he's really sympathetic to their circumstances), but if they blow it, mouth off, threaten people, besmirch his courtroom or otherwise #### him off ... well, the video shows what happens.

Oh, and he's not afraid to call out other Attorneys on B.S. either. A "Stormwater Fee" (or some such) got overturned by him because the City was overstepping their bounds ... the City hired outside Attorneys to handle the legalities, and he literally squashed 'em. The State just sat back and laughed about it.

Oh, and it's the same Judge McBain in this video that went viral .... 20 million + views.

Yep. He's quite well-known here, and well-liked. Long as you aren't on the wrong side of his Courtroom.

That ABC legal coreespondant, Dan Abrams, clearly doesn't know many Michigan judges. Subtlety is often absent from their vocabulary when dealing with repeat or violent miscreants.
