US Navy's stealth destroyer joins the fleet

Recommended Posts

The US Navy officially welcomed its largest and most technologically advanced destroyer to the fleet Saturday as the USS Zumwalt was commissioned in Baltimore.

The Zumwalt is striking in appearance, with sharp angles and weaponry concealed behind flat surfaces, a design that makes it many times more difficult to spot on radar than conventional destroyers.

"If Batman had a ship, it would be the USS Zumwalt," said Adm. Harry B. Harris, Jr., commander of the US Pacific Command, where the ship will be assigned.

The ship also has an advanced power plant and weapon systems that can move the Navy into the future, said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

I mentioned this ship name to my dad the other day.  He gave me this crazy stink eye look and said "named after Admiral Zumwalt?"  I told him yes and he laughed.  My dad was in the Navy when Zumwalt was the CNO and my dad didn't think highly of him at all.

Purty ship, i wonder how quiet it runs to avoid sonic detection.

AIUI; the tumblehome hull drastically reduces noise from cutting the water, and its underwater signature is similar to a sub.

The radar stealth is such they have to hang large radar reflectors coming into port, especially if visibility is poor. It's a 610 foot ship that has the signature of a 40 foot fishing boat.

I bet I know what he wanted to do when asked by his career advisor at school

After the Navy maybe he'll go to work at SpaceX. Already testing the propulsion & tanks.

I don't think astronauts have a captain rank, I think it's commander but I could be wrong

It's been Commander, Pilot, Payload Commander, Mission Specialist etc. on NASA missions, though they keep their service rank.

On commercial missions the company can use whatever ship or crew designations they prefer. It's their bird and show.
