what do you think apple will do on january 24 2004

yeah when.. its already the 25th :p

Most companies don't release products over the weekend, unless they're desperate. Wait until tomorrow or Tuesday.

right now, i doubt apple will do much at this time... most companies don't make products to "celebrate" their anniversaries...but then again... apple is different

Actually, id you had done your research before posting you would know this is a fairly common practice. In fact, apple made a computer for their 20th anniversary. This is the 20th anniversary of Macintosh, not Apple, so everyone is hoping they will just repeat what they already did with something new. Check this out.

Kinda like if I want a pair of Infiniti Kappa speakers - I can't buy them from sony, or if I want Armani jeans I can't go to the Gap to get the, or like that time I wanted a cup of starbucks coffee but I couldn't get it at 7/11 because they're not allowed to sell it. Apple selling apple computers is just terrible: I mean that's as bad as Ford not being allowed to produce Accords to sell to me.

I would really like to know how you can live in a capitalist society and not know that ALL COMPANIES HAVE A MONOPOLY OF THEIR OWN PRODUCTS. That's a fundamental part of the system, and it's not ever gong to change.

Furthermore, being a monopoly is not illegal: abusing the special powers that being a monopoly grants you is. Microsoft broke those rules, had their day in court and then were found guilty - That's why people rag on Microsoft being a monopoly: they don't play fair. Apple has been to court a few times and lost once or twice but it never had anything to do with being an illegal monopoly (ie: the Apple records saga).

How about sueing clone makers out of business? And as for apple not being buggy because they are all made by them, need I remind you of all the **** that didnt work when os x first came out? like dvd's cd burning etc....

The clones were never sued. Apple licensed Mac OS 8 and portions of the Macintosh Toolbox (aka The Mac ROM) to half a dozen companies including PowerComputing. Steve Jobs came back and ended the clone days by:

1) Buying out remaining contracts

2) Refusing to renew contracts when they expired

At the rate apple was losing money to clone business they wouldn't have survived to ship OS 9 if they hadn't done something. For the companies that have planned to make a macintosh clone without a license to ship a copy of the mac toolbox (a clean-room implimentation of the toolbox is another story but it hasn't happened) then it's a clear case of piracy (ROMs are software too - you can't just duplicate them at will).

If you want to run OSX on a non-macintosh system you'll need a license to do that. If you don't like that (or apple doesn't want to sell you one) then you're free to use another operating system. That's not foul-play, it's the way capitalism works.

Apples hardware/software works well for the most part because it is well written and has been refined over the last 4 years. Today OS X is very reliable, and Macintosh systems have the praise of the high-tech and the industrial design communities. I'll willing admit that OS X.0 was more like public beta 3 and that up to 10.1.5 wasn't anything spectacular but 10.3 is very impressive. Personally I don't care if OS X + Macintosh is a great solution because The-Woz sold his soul to the devil: it works, and that's all I (and most other mac owners) care about.

If we want to talk about things that didn't work four years ago I'll go find a copy of Windows ME and start making a list. Don't ask like Microsoft and it's users have no control over the quality of the software/hardware they run. When you buy a big-OEM system with that little "Designed for Windows" logo on the box that means that Microsoft has certified that hardware to work with Windows. I wouldn't bring up the 'biege-box' solutions because we all know that using non-certified gear is a gamble and that isn't microsoft's fault.

and a few weeks ago, right after MWSF (lackluster compared to apple's standards) ...i was seriously expecting to see new products being announced today.

I heard somewere there were apple reps going around macworld and telling the people there that were disapointed with the keynote that there was going to be something announced for the 20th aniversary. I guess the reps didnt know what they were talking about

Or they're just waiting a bit to kill the hype?
