Can't type in Start or Search Windows 10

After a reboot, I can't type in Start menu or Search box.  All other programs work fine.  I tried restarting a second time, same result.  I don't remember seeing update available.  Windows key brings up Start menu, just can't search for anything.

 

This install is several months old and on an Elitebook 8740w.

Try running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt, it is possible some of the system files have become corrupt and sfc will fix those.

Sorry I haven't replied back.  I get "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

 

Honestly, I'll probably just reformat.  It's a work laptop I have been using at home, so can't just image it next week.

something bad happened that screwed sfc or you are using a build that reportedly has sfc errors. try a reset or reinstall

Original version was November, but updated to Anniversary Update a couple of months ago.  This started around the day I posted.  I'll probably update our base image to the Anniversary Update while I'm at it.
