Bluetooth Dongles?

Recommended Posts

Hey! :)

Just ordered a Sony Ericsson P900, and obviously want Bluetooth. I saw they were quite expensive @ the Apple store for example, and thought... hmm... 'eBay' ? That leads me to the question, are these all the same?! I obiously need it to work with Mac OS X, and would prefer to buy one of the cheap ones from eBay if i could... anyone have any ideas?!

The D-Link adapter on the Apple Store is 35GBP, and there are adapters on eBay upward from 10GBP.

Edit:

This one quotes as supporting Mac OS 10.2 - you think its worth nabbing?!

I have a "cheapo" one and it works just fine. I actually had to wait on Apple to update iSync in 10.3 before I could use it with my phone's calendar, though :D

I had an MSI one, and had no end of issues with it. Now I have a Belkin and it's great. Also heard good things about the D-link models!

Hey, it came today, and OS X seems to work fine with it. I am still waiting for my P900, but my dad has a 3650, i'm gonna try for now! :)

One question tho, is there anyway to 'disable' bluetooth, as i choose? The reason i ask, is because of the light on the dongle, its as you can see very bright (and its facing the other way too!!). I like it, its cool but it will bug me when i am trying to sleep, i am sure. I unticked 'discoverable' but that didn't make a difference :(.

Hey dude welcome back ;)

On my Dongle you can turn off/on bluetooth using the Menubar nr the clock.

You can enable that menu using the BlueTooth Pref panel.

OK, i think i need some help... I 'paired' the devices succesfully, but i can't seem to browse or send data either way. Any ideas why?

What error messages are you getting? I could never browse my phone but I could always send JPEGS to the phone from the Mac, but only small <100K files otherwise the phone would crash! might be worth trying.

Hey, thanks for your replies, Here's a few caps, of how everything is configured.

The 3650 is setup as follows:

Bluetooth: On

My Phone's Visibility: Shown To All

My Bluetooth Name: Nokia3650

Paired Devices: 'cube'

You can see from the caps, they are paired, but when i try and do anything, it attempts to 'validate', but fails each time.

I use bluetooth with my SE T610.... No Problem. I just paired the phone with the mac. Then I got to "Browse Device..." in the bt menu and there it is...

"Send File" works fine too. I also tried to connect to my friends PC via BT. We swapped a few files just fine.

By the way does anyone know how to rename a Bluetooth device on the Mac? My friend has the same phone and I never know which phone is mine... so I end up removing it and re-pairing when needed...

I can rename devices on my phone, on my PC but I haven't figured it out on the mac yet.... :(

Thanks for the info, I have posted over @ a Nokia3650 site, and come to think of a couple of contributing factors...

The USB Dongle isn't plugged into a Powered USB Slot. Into the Pro Keyboard infact.

The Dongle doesn't definately support OS X, altho the fact I can get as far as I do, gives me the impression it does.

In that last screen cap, it mentions you're 'Device Services', currently I cannot seem get the list of services back from my 3650. :(

I'm going to plug the dongle into my Cube, and try that. Do you have the D-Link adapter, jus curious.

Thanks for your post tho, appreciated.

As for renaming... What did you mean? Rename your computer? If so thats done in the 'sharing' tab in your System Preferences, otherwise i'm not so sure as to what you meant! :p

Peace

If you rename your phone on the phone itself, it'll show up with that name on your Mac when paired.

At least, that worked for me with my T610

I'll let you know how I connected mine at home. All I can remember was that it was buggy under Jaguar, but at least a lot improved in Panther. I'm not using the D-LINK adapter and it's not supposed to work on OSX, but it does. In fact, any bluetooth dongle should work just fine. It's an open standard type of thing.
