MxxCon
some metals naturally have magnetic fields. just becuase it wasn't artifically magnetized doesn't mean it's neutral. i'm sure greate chinese educatation system tought you that allows made with Manganese will have ferromagnetic properties. and like it's been stated above, it's very obvious how that compas works.. and if what JB posted is true, i question if those "antique experts in China" are "experts" at all. **marisa**
lol.. no i think youre wrongits an ancient chinese ashtray full of water.. geez.. ppl now-a-days LOL! JB, its just a fricking compass dude! with like a magnetized needle and other such stuff... however, it could be interesting in that it maybe quite old, and archeologically quite intriguing. Revolutionary? No.
mayamaniac
this is no great find, the needle compass is common knowledge. I don't even remember when I first heard of this, when I was pretty young. The needle does need to be "magetnized." You need need to rub it against wool or other coarse material to make it static. Then put it on a stem, could be a small leaf also, and float it on a small pond of water and it will point north.
jack_canada
South=north,,if it points north, then the opposite side is south...
leedogg
Perhaps the container is made of something special which magnitizes whatever you put inside...or perhaps it isolates the object from extraneous forces so that it becomes super sensitive... mark03
guys, it's a compass  it's not like we can harness the energy from all the stars in the universe or fly to the moon in 4.345285 seconds or turn ourselves inside out.
