isus
i'm looking forward to seeing the new spymac, but is it down bc they are replacing it, or down just because it's down? my guess is, it's just down... i heard, and would be willing to believe, that v3 is coming up on the 20th anniversary of the mac: jan 16th. Bling3k12
Spymac said it'd be up for some beta testing before the 16th, which is a "special day" to those who use Macs... most likely that date is significant because it was the first time Apple had posted a profit in a long while, all because of strong sales from the new iMacs, PowerMac G3's, and also Jobs coming back to the company. Tim Dorr Veteran Posted January 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 16, 2004 Welcome to Spymac 3, public beta 1Today marks the introduction of a new initiative known as Spymac 3. For a brief overview of what's new, click here. Remember iTools? We do. Before there was the $99-per-year .Mac, Apple offered a free suite of Internet services known as iTools. From web-hosting to iCal publishing, iTools offered easy, Mac-centric access to some of the coolest aspects of Internet life. Even though multiple iTools replacements eventually popped up, not a single one managed to gain the following and generate the excitement that iTools did. Why? They did not offer the features Mac users expected. They did not offer the integration that was first experienced with iTools. And perhaps most importantly, they were not completely free. Enter Spymac 3 More than a year of planning, development and sleepless nights was invested into Spymac 3, and we're pretty happy with the results. We're proud to announce that as of today, each member gets 100MB of free web space, complete with WebDAV access for easy uploading and sharing. Additionally, we're offering free iCal hosting (both private, password protected and public publishing), free e-mail (25MB of space, web-mail and external access), free blogging services, and 250MB of free space in the Spymac Gallery. We're currently in talks with several software publishers to distribute their products directly from each member's Spydisk (the Spymac-equivalent of the iDisk. If you are a software publisher, contact us for more information). In short, Spymac 3 offers more than iTools ever did, and even challenges Apple's current .Mac in many areas. To pull all this off, we have built the core of Spymac around 42 high-powered, dual-process servers: perhaps making Spymac 3 the largest and most ambitious third-party project of its type ever to launch on the Mac Web. But that's not all But all of that is just a small part of Spymac 3. In fact, one key area that has never been successfully harnessed on the Internet is the passion and commitment of the Mac community. So we developed our own software to do just that. We created our own Forums, our own Gallery, our own Auctions, our own Blog software, and much, much more. Along the way, we developed some pretty cool technology that has never been done before on the Web: Members can create their own forums and galleries with just a few clicks (The implications of this are impressive: if you are collecting pictures of antique automobiles, for example, simply create an antique car gallery and watch as the community uploads directly into your collection!); The entire site is time-sensitive and automatically synchronizes with your system clock; All services are completely integrated with iChat (simply enter your iChat username into your profile and Spymac automatically detects your audio/video capabilities, grabs your iChat-picture for display purposes and broadcasts your online status to the community); Advanced image handling makes each picture you upload to Spymac as unique as a snow flake (thanks to a combination of algorithms, random behavior and realistic masking and framing); Friend tracking allows members to be notified when a buddy signs on... and so much more. Auctions, Hosting and Spymac Merchandise To support Spymac's future development, we've created Spymac Auctions -- an Apple-only Internet auction service that is tailored to Mac users and integrated with the rest of Spymac. Because it's amazingly simple to use, cheaper than eBay and integrated into one of the most popular Mac sites on the Internet, we look forward to Spymac Auctions becoming the premier service for Mac users to buy and sell online. We will also soon be offering paid webhosting and domain registration to those members who require a bit more power than what is offered through our free services. Finally, over the past year, we have developed and produced our own line of high-quality, Spymac-branded merchandise. From PowerBook cases to iPod accessories, we think you'll be happy with the look and construction of our upcoming line of products. This is a public beta Some parts of Spymac 3 are not completely online; others need a bit of polishing. While we are in beta, we ask that you please look past the rough corners. We are hard at work fixing bugs and improving the various services. If you encounter a bug, please add it to theBug Tracker. Enjoy

SFNE Freak
Am I right in thinking spymac's hosting isn't yet running? Considering the fact that when you click on "Hosting" at the top it says "Opening Soon" in big ol' letters, I'd say you're right in thinking so. ;)
am_fek
They're offering all that for free? They must be getting a lot of funding from people who don't care their money is being thrown away :( Either that or at some point in the future they'll have to choose between initiating a subscription or shutting down again. I sound like Deputy Downer I know.. don't get me wrong, this is an excellent service, and I hope it lasts.. but I'm going to stick with .Mac, because I know for sure it'll still be around in a year's time. wtmcgee
i think once things get up we'll see more ads on the site or something. still though, this is almost more than .mac offers, and it's all free, and not held up by a megacorporation like apple.
